Farm holidays with children on Lake Constance

Vacation on a farm on Lake Constance with children – I honestly never would have thought that I would go on such a vacation. But today I would like to break a lance for this: a holiday on a farm on Lake Constance is really worth a trip! And the kids love the farm adventure!

Work is waiting in front of the Lake Constance farm idyll: wanting to make a quick decision at the end of Easter vacation to Lake Constance was not my wisest decision. However, the pregnancy keeps getting closer, and shortly before the birth I didn’t want to go on vacation with children (and Kegel) either.

Spoiler: We were lucky and found another two-bedroom apartment on a beautiful farm in the Lake Constance region, more precisely in the Deggenhausertal. During our family vacation with friends, the proximity to Lake Constance was important to us and the family friendliness of the farm. Luckily: The Franzenhof in Azenweiler is only around 20 minutes away from Meersburg and rents out 10 family-friendly apartments on their farm.

Holidays on a farm on Lake Constance – how to get there & location

Our beautiful holiday farm is located in the middle of Deggenhausertal (Azenweiler). From the Augsburg area you need about 1.5 hours driving time (with the rush hour in Ravensburg a little longer). With the two children we also paused in a nice café / bakery with a play corner in Amtzell opposite the ARAL on the B32. From Ravensburg the path winds up into the Deggenhausertal via serpentines; also ideal for motorcycle enthusiasts.

Salem is just 15 kilometers away, Meersburg 20 kilometers and Friedrichshafen 22 kilometers.

Eating with children at Lake Constance in Deggenhausertal

By the way, you can dine two neighboring towns from our farm at 1000 meters in a great mountain inn (“Höchst”). I can only recommend making a reservation. And wait for good weather, otherwise you won’t be able to enjoy the view.

The Landhotel Adler in Roggenbeurer Straße in Deggenhausertal is also highly recommended (try the Maultaschen!).

There is a supermarket about six kilometers away for self-catering. The farm offers a bread service.

Holidays on a farm on Lake Constance – the “Franzenhof” farm

The Markhart holiday farm in Deggenhausertal in Azenweiler, called Franzenhof, is popular with families from all over Europe. We were lucky with our farm vacation – a nice apartment was free for three nights. Miraculously the apartment was very quiet despite the fact that the apartments were full.

The apartments are spacious and ideal for holidays with small children on Lake Constance:

  • Key board for keys (children like to lock themselves up)
  • Changing table in the bathroom
  • bathroom stool
  • cot
  • Wooden furniture
  • Self-catering possible through your own kitchen
  • Bed linen and towels available
  • Shoe cabinet for rubber boots in the hallway
  • high chair
  • Other children’s and baby accessories available (which we didn’t need)
  • Breakfast on request

The farm itself also has a lot to offer for children – even when it rains:

  • Play barn with table football, toys and much more.
  • Reading and play room with books, dolls & marble Run
  • billiard room
  • Heurutsche
  • Children’s Playground
  • football pitch
  • trampoline
  • Garage with children’s vehicles from Kettcar to Bobbycar to tricycles
  • Pony riding
  • Sandberg
  • Rabbits & Feed the goats
  • Grill the stick bread at the barbecue area
  • drive a tractor

Our children loved to frolic – even in the rain – on the sand mountain and the huge puddles in front of it – that was a real joy. If it got too wet, the two three-year-olds slipped on the big hay slide – because that is covered. We spent the evenings in the reading room, where they played with the marble run or the foam ball.

Holidays on a farm on Lake Constance – activities with children

The Lake Constance region offers a lot for holidays with children. Here are some tips that you can do with your children on Lake Constance even when it rains:

Sailing on Lake Constance with children

Lake Constance shipping with children: From Meersburg via Mainau to Überlingen and back again: For children, sailing is a great adventure and you will definitely stay dry inside …

Discover Meersburg with children

Meersburg is exciting: Lake Constance right in front of your nose, the beautiful promenade with ice cream parlors and Meersburg Castle on the mountain: You can confidently plan half a day here. But be careful: parking spaces are scarce, especially in high season.

Trip to Mainau

To Mainau you drive by car ferry from Meersburg via Constance or by Lake Constance from Meersburg. On the flower island there are large play areas for children, a water playground, a children’s farm, pony rides and a lot to discover!

Salem Castle & Affenberg with children

Salem Castle was only about 20 minutes away from us. The gardens invite you to run, the grounds are large and a great adventure for children: there is a glass blowing workshop, a church, the boarding school, a fire department museum and a great new playground with water, sand excavators, fire engine and low rope garden. If you drive a little further, you will visit the Affenberg – around 200 Barbary Macaques live in the wild.

Unteruhldingen pile dwellings

Limited use for small children because the stilt houses stand on stilts in the water. Still worth a visit, because this is how children see how people used to live on Lake Constance.

Excursion to Lake Ilmen with children

The Ilmensee was only a stone’s throw away from our vacation home. Things are more tranquil here in the off-season. The outdoor swimming pool is ideal for water lovers – including a playground and rowboat rental.

Vacation on a farm on Lake Constance – my test verdict

The first time vacation on a farm with children in one of my favorite holiday regions, Lake Constance – how was it actually??

I thought the holiday was great because I didn’t want to go far when I was very pregnant. Lake Constance was the ideal destination. Nevertheless, there was a "holiday feeling", a break from everyday life. And with friends, the whole thing is even more fun. I give the farm itself four out of five points: it is absolutely family-friendly, the hosts are warm and friendly, and there is a lot on offer for children and parents. Unfortunately, I am quite meticulous about some things:

  • The pond fence was broken and therefore no longer safe – huge risk, especially for small children
  • The broken wire of the fence protruded into the paddock
  • Barbed wire as tree protection on the paddock
  • very rotten wood with a swing in the playground (could have been exchanged)
  • Metal parts on the paddock
  • no window locks in the apartments (2nd floor) – certainly not a must, but a suggestion
  • A cleaning kit for all horses (risk of transmission of diseases)
  • Vehicles for children partially damaged – could have been repaired in winter

CONCLUSION: Of course, I notice the horse stuff, because I’m more or less "from the subject". What would surely have been repaired would have been the pond border; the season has already started. Otherwise there was nothing to complain about, the hosts were very accommodating and the apartments were practical and clean. We would go there again, but longer this time.

Have you ever been on a farm holiday? Which farms can you recommend? I am looking forward to your feedback!

Cheers, Victoria
