If you want to use the Internet via mobile radio in your car, you need special solutions for the particular application. There is a world of difference between pure navigation services in a private car, the mobile use of streaming services in a motor home and the requirements for emergency vehicles used by rescue services. FTS hennig informs you comprehensively and supplies you with powerful vehicle antennas.

You can’t get more mobile: LTE, UMTS& GSM also available on the road

The word mobile radio already implies the special suitability for mobile use of internet and voice connections via LTE& co. However, the problems associated with the use of LTE (4G), UMTS (3G) and GSM (2G) in vehicles are obvious: the outer shell of the vehicle forms a Faraday cage (area-wide problem). What’s more, cars, trucks& co. At high speed, which causes problems when switching between mobile cells.

So, depending on the requirement, vehicle antennas for the car, the caravan or the truck, mobile radio routers or. Coupler and high-quality antenna cable required. With us you get a free and personal consultation. Do not hesitate and contact us!

Mobile antennas for car& co. – everything you need to know

Vehicle antennas for mobile internet in cars, trucks& motorhome

Mobile use of data services such as Internet, navigation and GPS is becoming increasingly important. Vehicle antennas for the car, the camper or the emergency vehicle are often unavoidable. Even if smartphone manufacturers believe that they do not need to install antenna jacks, the effective use of a vehicle antenna is possible.

Car antennas for LTE (4G)& UMTS (3G)

It is well known that we are safest in our vehicles during thunderstorms due to the faraday cage. What is far less known, however, is that we have only modest mobile reception on our four wheels because of the same principle. Car drivers, long-distance drivers and vacationers in mobile homes can usually sing a song about this topic. calls are constantly interrupted, navigation devices only work if the maps and navigation data are at least kept in a local buffer and streaming services (youtube, spotify etc) are not available.) not infrequently throw in the towel within a few minutes.

In addition, smartphones or. cell phones in the classical sense have always been a cause for discussion about radiation exposure and the effects of radiation on humans – and rightly so! When switching from one mobile radio cell to the next, both the base station and the cell phone try to prevent tearing off and regulate the transmitting power upwards to a maximum. This exposes people to much higher radiation levels. So in practice, in addition to the question of wifi in the car and the best possible reception in the vehicle, your own health is a particularly important aspect that should not be neglected.

Sticks or UMTS and LTE routers must also go to the performance limits without an antenna in the vehicle. In many cases, these devices have no reasonable reception without an external antenna.

In short: there is no way around mobile radio antennas for cars, trucks or mobile homes if you do not want to compromise on reception and health.

The requirements for mobile Internet in cars and other vehicles such as trucks and mobile homes could not be more different. Drivers usually want to improve the reception for long journeys in order to be able to make phone calls without interruption. For trucks and caravans the focus is mostly on the internet connection. Especially for mobile homes, the vehicle antenna should not only provide the whole family with LTE or at least HSPA+ on long trips, but also enable the use of the local WLAN network on the campground. So no one has to do without TV services and streaming platforms anymore.

Emergency vehicles often have even more special requirements. If two SIM cards are to be used for the necessary fail-safety and the WLAN network is to be switched automatically when the control center is reached, there is no way around high-quality vehicle antennas and corresponding routers.

Classification of vehicle antennas for LTE& co.

  1. Permanently mounted individual antennas on the vehicle roof can be glued or attached with suction cups
  2. Window clamp antennas and magnetic antennas for rapid deployment
  3. Very popular are complete antenna systems in one housing.

Up to 150 mbit/s with LTE vehicle antennas

Since the launch of LTE in 2013, the mobile communications networks of telekom, vodafone and telefonica have been steadily expanded. While up to 300 mbit/s is already technically possible with LTE advanced, the networks and thus the network operators’ tariffs have so far allowed a maximum download speed of 150 mbit/s – and the trend is upwards.

But be careful: in practice, too great a distance to the nearest transmission mast, the relief of the landscape and the shielding by buildings and large objects regularly have a negative effect on reception via LTE, UMTS etc. From. On the road, there can also be repeated interruptions when switching between neighboring radio cells. Without a high performance vehicle antenna, stable internet coverage in car& co. By mobile radio mostly completely impossible.

Whether you just want to make phone calls in the car, use apps on the road as a passenger, set up a mobile hotspot or provide a wifi network for all passengers: without a vehicle antenna, there are constant problems with mobile radio reception when you’re on the road in a car, truck, camper or motor home.

after buying a new car, people are reluctant to drill a hole in the roof or otherwise in the bodywork for a single antenna. For this case, window antennas and magnetic antennas are the best solution. If, for example, you want to supply a yacht or a sport boat with LTE, you may have to install an. Install a complete antenna system. If you need help in choosing the right car antenna, we are happy to receive your call or e-mail. We advise you independently, comprehensively and competently – free of charge, of course!

Roof antennas for all vehicles

The classic vehicle antenna is located on the roof of the car and is designed as a λ/4 radiator. These radiators provide a gain of 0 db and are precisely tuned to one frequency. These radiators are unsuitable for a wide bandwidth. Antennas with a power of approx. 2 to 3 db are 5/8-λ radiators. these antennas are even more frequency specific. In the areas of professional, tetra and government radio, these antenna radiators can be over a meter long. Therefore these antennas are often mounted on the rear of the vehicle.

the λ/4-radiators and 5/8-λ-radiators for mobile radio have a length of only 3-9 cm and can therefore be mounted on the vehicle roof without difficulty.

ATTENTION: but the radiators are only "half" antenna and do not work alone at all. These car antennas for the improvement of the GSM, UMTS or LTE signal need a metallic counterweight surface, the counterpole or counter antenna. The earth! The vehicle body, together with the antenna base and the antenna radiator, forms the entire vehicle antenna. If these antennas are mounted in vehicles with plastic roofs, counterweights in the form of a metal plate must be installed afterwards.

the metal plates for the counterweight must have a side length of at least λ/2. So recommends z.B. panorama antennas, one of the leading manufacturers of vehicle antennas for cars, trucks and mobile homes, the LPB-7-27 antenna has a surface area of 400 x 400 mm.

Since the frequency spectrum for mobile radio has grown enormously and more than one device often needs an antenna in the vehicles today, the single radiators are hardly used anymore. Complete antenna systems have become established as roof antennas.

Holes in the car body: disadvantage of roof antennas for cars!

Roof antennas have a not inconsiderable disadvantage: a hole has to be drilled in the vehicle body for installation. This is certainly less of a concern for company cars than for private vehicles, but in practice, antenna variants that do not require drilling are very much in demand.

Mobile phone windscreen antennas for cars

The car window antennas do not need holes in the window or the car body. These antennas consist of two parts. In the case of adhesive window antennas, the radiator forms one part on the outside of the window and the second part consists of the counterweight and the cable connection inside the vehicle. Decoupled radiators are used because the counterweight is very small. However, the performance data given for these disc antennas must always be regarded as very optimistic. in reality, the yield via inductive coupling through the window pane is relatively low.

Modern window antennas for all vehicles

Newer variants of disc antennas are manufactured on thin plates. these antennas form a kind of dipole with radiator side and counterweight and therefore do not require any further receiving measures. These antennas are self-contained.

For GSM (900 mgz), DCS and LTE (1800 mhz) and UMTS (2100 mhz) the triband antennas are very common. FTS hennig even offers a vehicle window antenna, the the entire LTE spectrum covers. These antennas can be installed on the inside of the window using suction cups. The antenna provides 4 dbi gain over the entire frequency range. For LTE MIMO applications, this antenna is also immediately available as a dual version.

Magnetic antennas for mobile& stationary use

Magnetic antennas are often used for vehicles as well as in buildings as indoor antennas for uncomplicated applications, because the installation itself is extremely simple and the dimensions are kept within limits. However, some peculiarities must be taken into account.

Special features of magnetic antennas

Unfortunately, many of our customers are still not aware of the fact that the same physical laws apply to the magnetic antennas as to the λ/4-radiators on the roof. This means that even if the magnetic mount antenna stands on its own and does not fall over, an iron plate always has to be placed under it as standard! Also here is missing the counterweight already described above. today, vehicle bodies are increasingly made of plastic or aluminum. So the use of most commercially available magnetic antennas becomes more and more difficult.

IMPORTANT UPDATE (06.2016)

In the early summer of 2016, panoramas antennas launched the LPBEM-7-27-2SP, the first broadband magnet mount antenna on the market no more counterweight needed. We heartily congratulate our esteemed colleagues for this pioneering work!

Complete antenna systems for vehicles

Many of our customers already use a whole range of technical devices in their vehicles (trend increasing), all of which require an antenna. The devices can be smartphones and tablets, but also the mobile radio router, the WLAN transmission via the LTE router and the GPS antenna. Since LTE and WLAN nowadays need two single antennas each, we talk here if necessary. About five individual antennas. The vehicle would look like a spy vehicle – not to mention the holes that may have to be drilled.

panorama antennas has also met this challenge. In the housing of the vehicle antenna LPMM and LGMM are manufactured different stages of expansion of the antenna. The customer now only needs one hole in the roof. The MIMO LTE antenna, the WLAN N antenna and the GPS antenna can be installed with one assembly. The antenna system works as a groundplane antenna and therefore does not require a metallic mounting surface. The antenna can be installed in any plastic roof. This makes these mobile radio antennas also suitable for the improvement of the reception in mobile homes/caravans. If you use the IBR 600 router, for example, you can set up a real media center in your motorhome. The high-speed internet in the car, which is provided by the LTE antenna elements, can be transmitted via the WLAN elements of the car antenna z.B. To be distributed to smartphone, tablet and notebook. On the camping site, in the harbor and at all other stops that provide a WLAN network, the external WLAN signal can be fetched via the WLAN section of the antenna and also be transmitted to cell phones, tablets and co. To be provided.

pictures& installations from our customers

here you can see an antenna installation on a very special vessel. Our customer has prepared his yacht for the big round trip. the customer does not use classical vehicle antennas on the boat, but he installs antennas which are also called base station antennas. In the foreground you can see two poynting high performance antennas. With these antennas the LTE or HSPA signal is received. the smaller antenna on the top left is a dual-band antenna for WLAN 2.4 and 5 ghz. The 2. WLAN antenna was installed below deck.

LPMM-7-27-24-58 was discussed in advance with the customer. Because there is much more mounting space on a boat and the individual antennas achieve a higher gain, the decision was made to use these antennas. In a car, truck or motorhome, it is not possible to install so many individual antennas – that is exactly what the LPMM is for.

CONCLUSION:

from simple car antennas for mounting on the roof to window antennas and magnetic antennas to complete antenna systems, there is a wide range of options available for improving and stabilizing mobile radio reception (GSM/UMTS/LTE) in cars, trucks, mobile homes or even on yachts.
