Ticino is located on the southern side of the Alps, so that even here in November extended MTB tours at pleasant temperatures are possible. We wanted to take advantage of that again before the first snow falls. This time we started with two buses. Christof and Tilmann left with the VW T6 Multivan on Friday evening in the direction of Altman in the Appenzell Alps. Here, the focus was primarily on alpine climbing. Sven and I were able to start only on Sunday, then around the Monte Tamaro with the bikes to drive around on Monday and finish after Quartet.

For two, it is almost impossible to get a space problem with the VW T6 Multivan, no matter how much sports equipment and camping equipment is transported on the bus.

Because the Multivan fit even the bikes with removed Voderrädern relaxed in front of the 3 rear seat in the rear.

Provision and technology are deposited in the front footwell. Here convince the many subjects that can be used for mobile phones, accessories and other. Also inspire the additional shelves and holders for bottles, which run through the entire vehicle.

The entire material is in bags and boxes and is stowed in the trunk. Again, the direct access to the boxes and bags from the front is only possible to a limited extent, because the Multiflexboard VW covers a portion of the trunk for the expansion of the bed.

Transport of the camping equipment and the provisions takes place in the trunk under the flexboard.

Despite the beginning of the holiday, the traffic was manageable and with the driver assistance systems Automatic Distance Control (ACC) and the cruise control, the destination could be reached comfortably and without being flashed. This accessory is a must for Tilmann and his wife to travel relaxed on vacation.

Christof found the many possibilities for storage in the doors and side walls super practical. He would also wish this at Marco Polo. However, the noise is significantly louder compared to the Mercedes and the suspension is not quite so comfortable tuned. In the question of a pleasant cruising speed we could agree on 140 km / h.

Over the Gotthard offers the 4 cylinder diesel with (94 kw) and 4motion enough flexibility to have fun even when traveling by bus. When looking at the board computer, the average consumption of 8.5 l was obtained up to the Monte Cenari (554 m) and medium load. That’s really sensational from my point of view.

To be able to start the next day directly, we met directly at the entrance to a secluded parking lot, which is only a few meters away from the Camper Area Tamaro.

The 3-seat in combination with the multiflexboard of the VW T6 becomes a generous bed across the entire width. For a comfortable night thick mattresses provide, which are also on the cushions. As a result, of course, valuable space is given away during the trip to stow them. But for two is not an issue. Only a few minutes are needed for the conversion. But with the seat folded, Tilmann can no longer sit upright on the bed to read. Despite the large amount of space now bicycles have no more space in the interior and are chained to the next tree.

Sleep with additional sleeping pads like in a four poster bed. These also take up a lot of space.

However, the lighting concept should be reconsidered, as even Tilmann and Christof did not understand the operating concept with their technical background. Maybe you have to look into the manual to switch the light on and off?

The operating concept of the interior lighting is still in need of improvement.

By default, no rotatable seat is provided in the Multivan, but can be configured accordingly. Here is the ideal combination to order the driver’s seat without swivel console and the passenger seat with swivel console. Because this gives the driver the ability to adjust the seat even in height, which is no longer possible with a turntable. When the passenger, it is worthwhile not only because of the space gain but also when two people sitting at the table. Because then you can sit comfortably opposite. For the turning console for the passenger, the new purchase costs about 250 euros. Alternatively, they can of course also be retrofitted, but are not comparable in comfort to the originals. Christof, however, was a little confused that when turning the seats only the rotating mechanism rotates. Anyone who wants to adjust the position of the seat afterwards can barely do it while seated.

The bed-and-breakfast package brings everything you need to sleep with you and, among other things, blinds for darkening, which only have to be pulled upwards and can simply be hung up. The material is not sensitive and can sometimes be kinked, without causing permanent damage.

At 6:30 we were awakened by Christof and Tilmann. Shortly afterwards we prepared the breakfast. In the Multivan it took a bit longer until everything had its place and the table was set up. But the seat covers are much better suited for everyday camping and forgive far more than many others. The café was completely omitted in the Multivan, so as not to have to additionally build the gas cooker. We have taken over the supply with Café.

The change took place at cool 6 degrees in the VW T6 Multivan outside, because unfortunately the high roof is missing to be able to move comfortably standing up. This also applies to the water supply, which is done here via a simple canister. After the drinking bubbles and bottles were filled, it was 7:15 clock finally towards the summit.

Even if there is a gondola that can carry you to the summit, we have chosen the classic variant. After about 2 hours we arrived at the top and took a break for the first time. Anyone who masters the last quarter without dismounting has definitely not drank too much beer the night before.

The first terrific downhill, however, we have ended in half and did not continue to Torricella tavern.

But back up towards Alpe Gam, continue to Alpe Nisciora and from there to Alpe Agario. If you do not want to push the bike anymore, you can also ride on your back on a flowig trail to Astano. The last third of this descent is sensational and the absolute trail fun is guaranteed. From Astano you can then drive to the lake to Lugano and from there by train back to Rivera.

Flowing trails in autumnal mood accompany us to Alpe Nisciora.

But we wanted a little more and went up to Monte Pola. Then it goes in a demanding and very technical trail from 1768 to 1200 meters down to Monti Idacca. We can hardly believe that there is such a beautiful trail that almost does not seem to end.

From there it goes on a tarred road back to the Alpe Di Neggia. The first few hundred meters of descent, we are on an MTB track with steep turns and kickers and can not believe it. Then we cross a stream that in the spring probably carries so much water that it can be passed only partially at this time of year. This is followed by another climb up to the Alpe Di Trecciura and then it’s just downhill, even more demanding and more technical. We are glad when we arrive in Quartino with the darkness and have no losses except our strength. The last reserves are then mobilized to come back over the old cobblestones to the Monte Cenari and to our parking lot.

Return to the parking lot around 19:00.

Back in the parking lot, we first changed and then strengthened with pesto and pasta, before we fell asleep happily shortly thereafter.

Conclusion

The VW T6 Multivan is virtually a car, as it is no longer like a Passat and comfortable for up to 7 people place in everyday life offers – and at moderate prices. In combination with the Multiflexboard, it offers a comfortable overnight stay anywhere in the world for up to two adults and one child. However, organizing luggage, cooking and provisions requires a bit more effort. Our conclusion for the VW T6 Multivan is thus:

The VW T6 Multivan is the perfect family vehicle for everyday life and offers everything for the weekend to enjoy the endless freedom of the couple. Camping holidays in summer are not an issue for the whole family thanks to a tent or caravan in a campsite. On the contrary, you have the flexibility to make the area unsafe by taking the local bus.
