What can you do in March in the Karwendel Mountains on a vacation?
March is still winter, so you can find very good conditions for skiing in the higher places in the Karwendel and especially for snowshoeing and ski touring.

In March, the nights are still cold, the snow freezes at night and becomes firm. During the day it thaws and there are very pleasant ski runs through the fine firn snow. It is also the time when you can sunbathe and sunbathe in the deck chair right next to the ski slope.

My advice:
If the winter days in December and January are too cold, you should schedule a winter holiday in the Karwendel at the beginning of March. It is wonderful to walk in the snow, to go sledding or skiing – and then to enjoy the sunshine in the snow!

March is the month for ski touring. On the higher mountains there is enough snow at that time and with the sun there are wonderful firn runs in the second half of March. One of the most popular ski mountains for ski tours in March in the Karwendel region is the Gilfert. This tour is about 1200 meters long. Also worth a visit is a ski tour on the Glungezer, where you have beautiful views of the Karwendelgebirge opposite. In the Karwendel itself you can ascend to the Lamsenjoch as an experienced ski tourer in good avalanche situation.

Which toboggan runs go sledding in March?

In March for sledding?
Yes, that too is possible. The toboggan runs are usually already closed down in the Inn Valley, but the long toboggan runs that are higher up offer consistently good conditions in March. From the snowy Gaistal the toboggan run leads to the Wettersteinhütte. Not infrequently you can sunbathe at lunchtime on the toboggan run on the terrace of the Wetterstein hut and eat the fresh Kaiserschmarrn from Hans. I especially like that. Therefore, my special tip for tobogganing in March: The Wettersteinhütte in the Leutasch.

Sunny cross-country skiing on the Karwendelloipe
A real treat is the cross-country ski tour through the Risstal to the Ahornboden and the Engalm. The sun will come in here in March as well. After 15 kilometers, the Engalm is reached, where you can enjoy the warm spring sun, before it goes back to Hinterriss.

When is the crocus blossom – and where?
While the snow is above, it starts to bloom in March on the sunny meadows in the valley. A true natural spectacle is the crocus blossom. In the second half of March, thousands of crocuses bloom near Wallgau and Krün. You can watch the crocus blossom in the Karwendel in the area of the Buckelwiesen near the Goasalm and the Geroldsee.
