Dental fillings that last a long time and look good
The advantages of so-called composite fillings
Dark spots on the incisors are not just caused by coverings. Often they are too old plastic fillings, which have discolored over the years.
You can clean as much as you want: this one dental fillings stay dark and well visible. The reason is:
In addition: The edges of these dental fillings are often not completely tight. Dyes also settle in the marginal gap, leading to a well-visible, dark border around the tooth filling. So you can often see from afar that the teeth are filled. Those who are affected often have inhibitions about showing their teeth.
Tooth-colored fillings with composites
composites are modern and high-quality plastics for dental fillings. They consist of about 20% of the actual plastic. Approximately 80% consist of the finest ground ceramic powder.
These composites are for aesthetic and stable tooth fillings of the incisors and molars used. They enter the tooth as a paste, are hardened with a special light and then polished. After that, you can immediately eat normally.
The advantages of composites
Dental fillings made of composites have considerable advantages over simple plastics:
- They are very stable and durable
- They are connected to the tooth in a special procedure so that no marginal gap is created
- They adapt to the color of the natural teeth and are therefore almost "invisible"
- They can be polished to a high gloss, so that no more color pigments can settle in the surface
- They no longer discolour like previous plastics
However, they are also more expensive and much more elaborate in processing. Since statutory health insurance companies only pay for ordinary plastics, an additional payment by the patient is required for composites. But this investment is worthwhile in any case:
Composite fillings can last about twice as long as simple plastic fillings and remain consistently beautiful for years to come. This means for you: you do not have to go through the filling procedure that often.
Where are composites applied??
Dental fillings made of composites are made by the dentist on both incisors and molars.
Both incisors is the optical effect in the foreground: composites can be selected to match the color of the teeth. Since they also have a certain transparency, they adapt to the natural tooth color very well. As a rule, a composite filling does not differ in color from the tooth: it is "invisible".
For dental fillings in the molars it mainly comes up stability on. You have to endure enormous pressure while chewing. Therefore, the fillings must be pressure-resistant and abrasion-resistant. Composites fulfill these requirements very well.
Which alternatives are still there?
Another alternative is so-called. Gold inlays. Inlay means "insert filling". These fillings are made outside the mouth and then cemented into the tooth. Although gold inlays have a very long shelf life. Because of their eye-catching color, however, fewer and fewer patients are opting for it.
Stay as a last resort Ceramic inlays. They are characterized by a long shelf life, high stability and their tooth-colored aesthetics. These are the reasons why more and more people who want the best for their teeth are choosing ceramic inlays.
How long do the different fillings last??
As far as the shelf life of the different filling materials is concerned, very different information is found in the literature. In the following table are therefore only Approximations listed from the various sources.
|fill type||Durability (years)|
|Simple plastic filling||3 – 5|
|Composite filling||5 – 8|
|Amalgam filling||8 – 10|
|Ceramic inlay||5 – 15|
|Gold inlay||6 – 20|
