How, with which methods, do adults actually find out best what the children are concerned with and what they want? In our four-part series of articles, Ingmar Everding, coordinator of the alliance, presents Quality in dialogue in the northern Weserbergland, tried and tested methods for child surveys. Dinos bannednot for everyone … ?

We have one Malinterview found out.

How does the method work?

In a painting interview, we ask the children three questions and let them paint something: What do you find great in the daycare center? What is not so beautiful What do you wish for At the end of the painting period, the adults talk to the children one by one and have the pictures explained to them.

What are the advantages?

With this method, parents and educators very quickly have a result – literally – in their hands that they can view and evaluate together.

What should you pay attention to??

The children need enough time to paint so that they don’t feel crowded. The conversation about the picture is important, because it is often impossible for adults to see what is meant. You should always ask the children first whether they can show their paintings to other people or take notes on the original picture.

How do the children find this method themselves??

The children find it exciting when we explain to them that the pictures are to be displayed in an art exhibition for educators. The little ones often talk to their parents about what they have painted. Because we also use the pictures for parent work.

What did you find out about it – and changed?

Once there was a big discussion at the painting table as to whether dinosaurs may be painted in the play den or not. It turned out that the children of some groups had the rule not to take toys into the cave. Others did not know this rule. Neither children nor adults knew why this rule even existed. It was a good occasion for the day care team and the Parents to rethink certain rules and their purpose.
