PRESS RELEASE – Bergisch Gladbach, May 4, 2018

Where the children usually let their urge to move freely, the wheel loaders and the garden designers drove, sawed and hammered for weeks: The integrative daycare center Wilde Wiese in Bergisch Gladbach has been given a new outdoor area, which will be handed over to the children on May 9 from 3 p.m..

The special thing about it: on the 3,500 square meter outdoor area of the daycare center in the Hebborn district of Bergisch Gladbach, a new freedom of nature has arisen in the best sense of the word. With ecologically sustainable play equipment and a play environment in which the connection to nature is paramount. And all this in day-care center operation.

And: It wasn’t just the Nuas craftsmen who worked here. Parents and educators also helped, anchored tree-long tree trunks in the ground, sanded wooden posts or nailed the boards to the roof of a new playhouse. The idea behind it: In a “social campaign”, the gardening professionals from Nuas created the new natural leeway together with the parents and the daycare staff.

“Our large outdoor area has always been a special part of the identity of the wild meadow. The connection to nature is already in the name of our daycare center, ”says daycare manager Sylke Bloek. “Over the past few years, we have continually expanded the site, planted new shrubs, planted beds or built and repaired play equipment. Now, after many years, it was time to create something completely new. "

It was no coincidence that the choice fell on the professionals from Nuas, which specializes in the natural design of daycare outside areas. The large tipi tent in the garden of the Wilder Wiese was also created in collaboration between the daycare team and Nuas. The concept for the new outdoor area corresponded exactly to the ideas and ideas of the daycare team. “We wanted the children to have room to move. But there are also many opportunities to experience nature. And not in a rigid, prefabricated environment, ”emphasizes Sylke Bloek. “We were thrilled with the Nuas concept when we only saw it on paper: arrangement, versatility, the fact that the children can design and change their playing environment themselves – that was exactly what we wanted. Nuas also mainly processes materials from the Bergisches Land. ”

Another special feature: The outdoor area was created as a “social action” in the joint work of parents and the horticultural professionals. On the one hand, this saved the daycare costs. Even more important is the close connection that was created in this way. “The parents create something with their own hands their children. When you get involved, you only realize how much work is involved in such a project. But when you see the result – and the joy of your own children playing on the new site – it makes you all the more satisfied, ”says Sylke Bloek.

Wilde Wiese has been connected to nature since its opening in April 1991 with its large, hilly and varied outdoor area. In the “wild garden” there are numerous shrubs, hedges and beds in addition to the old trees. Exploring nature is part of everyday life in daycare for the children of the Wilder Wiese.

The integrative daycare center aims to create a child-friendly, nature-loving and creativity-promoting environment. Disabled and non-disabled children, regardless of their nationality, denomination or social class, should feel comfortable and safe here. 76 children in four groups are currently visiting the Wilde Wiese.

"Contact with nature is essential for child development"

What makes Nuas different from other providers who design outdoor day care centers?

Klaus Bunse: For us, the child is always at the center of everything: for a child-friendly development, we plan natural spaces as places of movement, encounter and experience of nature. Contact with nature is essential for children’s development. And so natural game landscapes are created, which on the one hand meet the needs of each individual child, and on the other hand are also accepted by adults in terms of durability, risk of accidents and aesthetics. Nua’s scope for nature was and is always child-friendly, individual, sustainable and based on the basics of education, psychology, medicine, neurobiology and anthropology.

They are converting the site while the daycare center is running – this does not make work more difficult?

Klaus Bunse: Yes, it is difficult to carry out the work. It is not always easy for the team and the children. They are often not allowed to go outside for a week, two or three weeks – or only to a limited extent. But: The faces of the children flattening themselves on the windows, their constant observation, their questions – and their shining eyes again and again: none of our colleagues would like to do without this.

Dedicated parents helped out on several working Saturdays and, together with the Nuas professionals, set up the scope. How does the cooperation between professionals and parents work – and what is the importance of the cooperation of the parents?

Klaus Bunse: The common design, the common action, connects all participants with the created, their "creation", and with each other. They change the living environment of their children, design it according to their needs. After 25 years of experience with social action, we know from a lot of feedback that this always improves the climate in and around the organizing facility. And the children are proud of their parents. Above all, this form of cooperation requires a very good one organization on the part of the daycare team. And when the time comes, the parents become professionals: they discover hidden talents and their skills. The hard work leads to great results, and the sore muscles, which sometimes last for three days, cannot diminish the satisfaction with what has been achieved. For us it is always an exciting and thankful cooperation.
