Winemakers – what are they actually doing? Children’s non-fiction

What does a winemaker do??

There are professions that can be easily explained to children: bakers, postmen, bus drivers. But what makes actually a winemaker and why does he need a start gun? And why does he drive such a funny tractor, which is very narrow and tall and looks as if it is about to fall over?

Kalle is a real city child and has to move to a wine village in Rheinhessen. Luckily, he meets Mia, who has been to Berlin before and can imagine how Kalle feels. Together with her grandpa Erwin, she clarifies this to Kalle Life on the village.

The winemaker today and life earlier

Grandpa Erwin is a winemaker and, like so many grandfathers, he is happy to be able to tell about his profession and how it used to be.

Even the outline shows how much attention the two primary school teachers Antje Fries and Maike Müller have you children-Have written non-fiction book "Kalle im Wingert". Moving and finding friends, differences between the village and the city, the course of the seasons, agriculture in the past and today and the profession of the winemaker that needs to be explained – that is a lot of material for a children’s book. But the two authors know exactly what they want to tell and never lose the thread with all the information. They cleverly and discreetly incorporate the seasons in the form of a timeline on each side. So it becomes clear that there is exactly the right time for each work.

The highlight for me is the earlier-today comparisons. There is an old, sepia-colored photo on each double page showing how the winemakers used to work. Grandpa Erwin can tell a lot about this! The machines that are used today are drawn in detail. This is also where the riddle for the shock gun is cleared. A winemaker needs them to chase away starlings so that they do not eat away the ripe grapes. In the past, there were even watchtowers on the vineyard for this task.

"Kalle im Wingert" is a wonderful non-fiction book for elementary school children, which convinced me with attention to detail, a clear structure and credible characters and also told me interesting facts about viticulture and winegrowers.
