Work and live in the sos children’s village

Pupils at the Otto von Taube High School hold a colorful festival with play activities as part of a P seminar

Since autumn last year, 16 pupils from the Otto von Taube high school in Gauting have been working on SOS Children’s Villages as part of their P seminar. After getting all information about the association at various events, the pupils decided to organize an action day for the children of the SOS Children’s Village in Dießen in mid-October.

To this end, they collected money and donations in kind at a school’s open house and then planned the day of the campaign.
"In October a Dießen Oktoberfest was close at hand," commented one student and so the young people all came into costume. They lovingly and enthusiastically prepared various game actions: sack hopping, throwing cans, making jewelry, face painting and braiding hair, decorating gingerbread and dancing.

"We searched for popular children’s games in magazines and on the Internet," said one student. In any case, with their selection they landed a direct hit with the boys and girls, many of whom made up as Maya the Bee, princesses, fairies and vampires, put on bracelets made of colored pearls or decorated with layers of frosting and colorful sprinkles of sugar on gingerbread hearts. On the side, they hopped in sacks and fired the piled cans to the ground.

With their support and good humor, the students of the Otto von Taube high school ensured that the children spent a nice afternoon and showed that a social action like this does not only the fun for whom it was planned, but also for those who organized it.

The intensive engagement with SOS Children’s Villages in advance helped to make this campaign such a great success:

As part of the professional and study orientation phase, the P11 seminar at Q11 at the Otto von Taube high school in Gauting organized an information afternoon. It was the first career information event supported by SOS Children’s Villages. Two SOS employees first described to the 14 students how SOS Children’s Villages helps and why the work of the association is so important. They also reported on the SOS campus program in schools. The main part of the lecture, however, was job information, which means that the SOS employees told them about the different and exciting work areas at SOS Children’s Villages. Ms. Moraw provided the different pedagogical fields of work, which can be found at SOS Children’s Villages, after all, teachers, educators and therapists work for the association. Ms. Braune explained that the office mainly consists of administrative staff such as lawyers, accountants and marketing experts. In addition, the interested young people also learned what social skills are required for the respective job profiles and that it is also possible to do internships at SOS Children’s Villages in order to "sniff" into a job.

The pupils were allowed to take a look at an SOS Children’s Village three Months later. In order to get an idea of SOS Children’s Villages, 15 students from the P11 seminar went to SOS Children’s Village Ammersee-Lech in Dießen am Ammersee. First, an SOS employee described the history of the creation of SOS Children’s Villages and today’s association work with their current offers and projects. The students also saw a film about the SOS Children’s Village Ammersee. After that the 11th graders had a lot of questions, especially the everyday routine in the children’s village families interested them. During a subsequent visit to the village, the P-Seminar learned that donors and sponsors from SOS Children’s Villages co-finance a large part of the facility and projects and that their donations are therefore essential for the educational work.
The excursion gave the Q11 students a further insight into the SOS world, whereby the 11th graders particularly liked the realistic reports of the SOS educator.
