Experience with family vacation in Zell am See

Jakob, stressed family father of 2 bullies – 6 and 8 years old – is looking for relaxation (attention spoiler – and finds it too):

"Finally vacation again! In the past 2 years we could not afford to go on vacation with the whole group in addition to the dream of owning a home. Before the little one comes to school next year and the seriousness of life begins for him, we wanted ourselves and the children – at least for a week – treat yourself.

It quickly became clear that the vacation should take place in summer in August and in Zell am See. Only with the accommodation we could not really make a decision: vacation on the farm, on an alpine pasture, in a hotel or in a classic holiday apartment? – the possibilities were enormous.

The decision was ultimately made for us. We thought about it too long, so that most of the accommodations were already fully booked. Fortunately for 6 days there was a cozy apartment on the Organic mountain farm Hubgut by the Hofer family. So vacation on the farm in Zell am See.

The apartment is not directly on the lake, but that’s no wonder at a mountain farm :). It has a breathtaking view of the lake and the surrounding landscape to offer and by car you are in 10 minutes directly in Zell am See.

I hope you enjoy copying the following Tips for a vacation in Zell am See. The whole thing is rather brief, because I don’t want to annoy you with our everyday family life, which – like probably with 80 percent of families – consists of the same daily joys. This includes the mess after breakfast including an overturned glass (the glass can go through as desired a cereal bowl or Papa’s coffee cup), the repeated questions before leaving for the lake (or at any other travel destination) whether the teeth have already been brushed and whether someone wants to use the toilet again. And so on and so on…:).

Day 1 – arrival: It started in Tübingen, about 6 hours later we were there. Since we started around 8, we were able to enjoy the afternoon in the yard and buy everything for the next few days. The trunk was filled with two bags, a short walk through the old town and along the waterfront was rewarded with ice cream, then they cooked.

Yes, I know, the dessert is usually eaten after the main course, but the two toads can be really annoying and since my wife and I also had an appetite, we ignored the rules for a moment.

After dinner we took a little walk around the yard. The children then went to bed with an audiobook that was, as always, at a deafening volume … My wife and I actually wanted to look at the crime scene from last week, but then we got back to our favorite topic of loft conversions.

Day 2 – Lake Zell: Already in the morning it was wonderfully warm and cloudless, so we absolutely wanted to spend this vacation day at Lake Zell. We chose the Zell am See lido (costs about 4 € for all 4 of us) because there is a giant slide and diving platform for the children, as well as a trampoline and a water ski school. The mini golf course awakened my fighting spirit again for my wife and me :), even if we had to pay another 13 € for all of us.

Sure, you don’t want to have to pay attention to every cent on vacation, but we have a budget. We prefer to avoid the unhealthy fast food consisting of french fries and cola on such trips and take a few tasty snacks with us from home. Cooking is done in the apartment anyway, which is not only more fun, it is also cheaper and usually tastes much better than in the restaurant.

Day 3 – Active vacation at Lake Zell: A hike was on the program in the morning. So maybe we should call the whole thing a child-friendly walk. Neither the right equipment nor the necessary motivation was available.

We decided on the circular hiking trail around the Klammsee, which provides a welcome cool down on bridges and footbridges along the Klamm. The view of the lake and the partly turquoise water are beautiful, especially when the mountains and forests are reflected in the water.

Kaprun Castle was not far away, so we went there for a short and spontaneous detour. We had barely missed the medieval festival at the castle, which takes place every summer, but even without knights and the like, a visit to the castle was a successful change.

In the afternoon we went on a nice boat trip across Lake Zell. The cost for the 4 of us and a 45-minute round trip are € 22. It started at the Esplanade Zell am See. You can enjoy the beautiful view of the lake, the mountains, the surrounding villages and houses from the start.

Due to the wind, you don’t notice the sun so much, so always apply lotion well! Afterwards we strolled through Zell am See again, treated ourselves to an iced coffee or chocolate before we went back to the farm in the late afternoon.

Day 4 – exact repetition of day 2: The only difference was that this time we went to the Thurnbacher Strandbad and missed the mini golf action. We were all happy that we were just lazing in the sun and cooling off in between in Lake Zell. I even tried looking in the newspaper, which worked amazingly well. I have a book me not yet trusted.

Day 5 – Circular hike Rettenwand, adventure playground & Boating: Today we went to the beautiful mountains again, because tomorrow our vacation in Zell am See was unfortunately over again. Our travel budget was not yet completely used up, so today we took the cable car up to almost 2500 m. Ascent and descent with the Kitzsteinhornbahn glacier jet costs a good € 100 for a family with 2 children.

The circular route (Panoramaweg Gletscherblick) takes almost 1½ hours and is perfect for our little ones. The adventure playground at the mountain station or at the alpine center was the big highlight of the hike. Here and at the water playground, they could really let off steam before taking the train back down to the valley.

In the afternoon we borrowed a pedal boat for an hour in Zell am See – a crowning conclusion for the whole family. The big one and I jumped into the water from the boat and sprayed the rest of the crew with water – much to the disappointment of my wife. Nevertheless, the excursion was very successful and it was just great to see us all so relaxed and relaxed.

Day 6 – departure: Have breakfast, pack the rest and put everything in the car, departure. We said goodbye to Zell am See with the promise that we would be back and waved to the lake and the mountains from the car. The journey home went smoothly and before the madness at work and with the house continued, we could enjoy two days at home.
