Frugal Travel Tips

Do you feel like you’re stuck in a rut these days? A weekend away could be the perfect refresher. But how do you do it without blowing your budget? Make the most of your travel budget by following these frugal travel tips.

Smart Arrangements

Finding good prices for air travel can be a bit of an adventure in itself, but with a few smart strategies, you can simplify the process and save money. One idea is to try booking multiple legs of your trip separately. Instead of your airline scheduling the legs all in one fell swoop, you can price and purchase each leg yourself. (Just make sure you watch your transfer times.) You can save a pretty penny if you play it smart, especially if you book with a site like Priceline, which is known for low-priced fares, plus you can search for additional money back opportunities. read more

From Troy to Bogotá: a talk with Matthew Battle

After the release of his debut album with his band Warm Tricks, Battle will be presented on Friday, May 4 in Bogotá, the city that has seen him grow musically.

Do you know anything about Essex, England? This county located east of the island has brought to the world some of the most notorious musicians and bands of the contemporary world. But today we do not come to talk about the old glories, today we come to talk about an Englishman who fell in love with a Colombian woman in London while they studied both there and convinced him to go to Bogotá. He did not need to know about an endless number of animals or exotic fruits: love for his partner was enough. Today we are going to talk about Matthew Battle. read more

Food and Drink in Guatemala

Guatemalan food is filling and full of flavor. Like other countries in Central America, traditional meals rely heavily on corn, beans, meat, and tortillas. There are all kinds of local fruit drinks, coffee, and alcoholic beverages (especially beer and rum) to sample.

Overview

The people of Guatemala have fused their culture into their cuisine, and are proud to rely on their own agricultural bounty. Guatemalan food is largely based on corn, which has been a staple crop here for centuries. The corn is ground and then used to make the tortillas that most Guatemalans consume daily. Tortillas are delivered from local tortillerías or made in-house at the front of a restaurant. read more

Flying with a Pug: Everything You Need to Know

My husband and I adopted our pug from a dog-rescuer in Mexico City the year we first moved there. We lived there for three years but a few months ago we moved back to Canada. The reason we had chosen to adopt a small dog breed was so that we could bring them on a flight with us if we ever moved back. Since I’m Canadian and my husband is Mexican we knew we would be traveling a lot and didn’t want to put a dog in the cargo hold of an airplane. The thing with pugs, however, is that they are a snub-nosed breed and not all airlines will let you fly with them. Luckily for us, our vet told us that our pug is very healthy and has a good respiratory system. Still, flying with a pug, or flying with any animal for that matter, can be nerve-wracking the first time you do it. Here’s a guide that will help you prepare for your pug’s first flight. read more

Flying the Family-Friendly Skies: British Airways with Kids

Flying the Family-Friendly Skies: British Airways with Kids

If you’re wondering which airline has the best champagne selection or the highest thread count on their linens, this is not the post you’re looking for.

Our family travel style is very middle-of-the-road for international travelers. We fly in basic economy most of the time. Sure, we love a good airport lounge and we very occasionally spring for the lay-flat beds on nighttime flights. But we also are not “luxury” travelers. We don’t care about alcohol selection and don’t like to be checked on every 10 minutes. We do love getting from Point A to Point B without dreading our travel days, even if Point B is halfway across the world. read more
