We all know it is important to travel – you discover new cultures, meet new people, learn about different lifestyles from your own. You discover that there is so much more to the world than your little corner of it. However, although reading a motivational piece of writing on the importance of traveling can inspire most people, for many of us, traveling to far-off countries is not as easy as grabbing your passport and being on the go.
I was lucky enough to get to know Sri Lanka, the fantastically diverse and stunning country. From Colombo in the west to Kandy and Sigiriya in the cultural triangle, to Galle, Bentota and Beruwela in the south and many other fantastic places, I was allowed to get to know almost the whole island.
When it went to Sri Lanka for me in 2017, there was one decision before the trip – where exactly do I want to go?? Especially if you have only two to three weeks time for a round trip because of your job, it is worth to plan well in advance. For Sri Lanka the choice fell on the following route and places:

Sri Lanka has lots of nicknames. Officially the name of the country is ‘Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka’ but among others it’s also called ‘Tear of India’, because of its shape and location below India and ‘Lanka Dweepa’; pearl of the Indian Ocean. Many people still refer to Sri Lanka as ‘Ceylon’, a name given to the country by its Portuguese and British rulers, but as of 1972 its name was changed to the current one. Sri Lanka counts 22 million people, most of which are Buddhist, but also Hinduism and Islam are well represented religions.
Happiness has arrived! Sri Lanka tourism has now opened its borders for tourism, though there will be certain rules to be adhered to, now you can think of a trip to Sri Lanka in 2021. This gem of the Indian Ocean is a destination that can be enjoyed by each one of us from a kid to senior people. For some, the idea of travelling with a toddler sounds like a nightmare. The questions anxious parents ask themselves unscroll endlessly in their brains as the anxiety steadily increases. Logistically, how will all this work? Is it safe? Is it dangerous? What about the water? Will the time differences screw up his naps? How will he be on the flight? What if the trip is just an endless series of full-on meltdowns? But when we took our own toddler with us to Sri Lanka, none of the fears that plagued our pre-flight preparation ever surfaced. We had a dreamy time in the ancient island of Serendib, and in fact our son’s presence brought the sights sounds and tastes to life in ways we might not have even noticed had he not been there.
If there’s one spot you cannot miss in Sri Lanka, it’s this little piece of heaven nestled on the south coast of the country, Hiriketiya Beach.
It’s a surfer’s paradise, a yogi’s delight and the ultimate place to chill and relax.

August is the most popular month of the year to go on holiday! Being the busiest month also means it’s the most expensive time to travel and you can sometimes pay double for the same holiday if you were to book outside of August. Heart pounding, hands fumbling…shaking, mind and heart in emotional turmoil. This was my body’s response to my self-imposed adventure as I tried to get through security looking like a normal human being at Heathrow Airport.
Choosing to leave my job as a primary school teacher in the UK and teach in a British International School at a military base, somewhere in the desert near Kuwait and Iraq, was not a decision I took lightly. Being a desperately shy person, this decision to go forth into pastures new and far away took an act of courage and bravery almost beyond my capabilities.
