Boutique Hotel Stays in Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Dubbel Dutch Hotel

The Dubbel Dutch Hotel lives inside an 1898 English Renaissance Revival Style mansion. Located between downtown Milwaukee and the Lake Michigan waterfront, this unique boutique hotel prides itself on its immaculate attention to detail. The 17-room architecture is divided into the North and South house and contains an elegant parlor, dining room, and tavern open Thursday-Sunday.

Check-In

My check-in experience was very easy. I received an email a day or two before arrival that contained all the information I needed. This included a code to unlock the front door and my room, to allow for a completely contactless check-in experience. As an introvert – this is my dream! Parking is located directly behind the building (tip: not in the lot next to it).

I stayed in Room 208: the Superior Double Queens. When I unlocked the door, my jaw dropped. The room was huge and contained a decorative fireplace, picnic table-style desk, two queen beds, and a sitting area. Natural light poured through two sides of the room. The bathroom was huge and even included elegant lavender bath bombs created by Franciscan Peacemakers (an organization that “provides a pathway to a sustainable healthy, safe and productive life for women engaging in prostitution due to trauma, human sex trafficking or drug addiction.”).

The hotel is committed to sustainability, and therefore offers reusable items. Glass water bottles are placed in your room upon arrival, and are available in the parlor at any time. The toiletries are all refillable. I greatly appreciated their commitment to sustainable tourism.

The location of Dubbel Dutch itself is absolutely perfect. It sits in East Town Milwaukee and is just a few minute’s walk to Lake Michigan and the architecturally stunning Milwaukee Art Museum. Located directly behind the hotel is woman-owned Buckley’s Restaurant & Bar which is a delightful treat for a semi-formal meal.

Tavern + Mansion

The artwork in the rooms and throughout the mansion is for sale. The charm of the mansion was a cool mix of modern and old-school. At times I felt like I was in the re-make of Great Gatsby. You know what I mean? The decor was old-school but I felt like I was in 2021 nonetheless? Visit and you’ll see for yourself.

During COVID-19, meal service and seating are limited but guests can enjoy cocktails and light fare at the in-house tavern. The weekend I visited Dubbel Dutch they had their first pop-restaurant going on. I, unfortunately, wasn’t able to visit due to my schedule, but the menu looked great and when I walked through the mansion guests appeared to be having a great time! Hopefully, it’s successful and something that stays during your visit.

Check-Out

Just like check-in, check-out was entirely contact-less. The morning of check-out I received an email asking me what time I was planning on checking-out. I could either check-out immediately or select a time so I could just pick up and leave when I was ready. Easy as can be!

My takeaway from Dubbel Dutch is that it is detailed-oriented, efficient, eco-friendly, and beautiful. As the world gets used to traveling again, it’s important for accommodations to adjust to sustainable hospitality as Dubbel Dutch has done. I had a delightful stay, and I look forward to being back!
