Horseback riding is an exciting activity that has many health benefits. Not only is it a great way to get physical exercise but it also can improve the rider’s mental state. When riding a horse your brain releases serotonin- a hormone that enhances your mood by creating feelings of joy and relaxation.

If you are planning horseback riding adventure, here are a few tips to help create a fun and easy experience:

Dress Properly

Horseback riding is a sport that requires the proper equipment to ensure the safety of the rider and the horse. When horseback riding the rider should be wearing closes-toed shoes. Most experienced equestrians wear long boots with a low heel. The rider should also be wearing long pants which can be tucked into the riding boots. Other accessories can be added, like riding gloves, an equestrian helmet, and spurs which can be helpful, but are not necessary.

Preparing to Ride

Before you mount your horse, it is best to warm-up to engage your muscles and release any tension. Start by doing simple stretches to loosen your hamstrings and quads. Check out these easy stretches here.

Mounting the Horse

Take the time to properly greet your horse before mounting. As a living creature, they respond to the way they are treated so it is important to approach your horse calmly as to make them feel comfortable. A great way to earn your horse’s trust before mounting is to do the “horseman’s handshake”. To do this, simply approach the horse with your arm outstretched at a slightly downward angle. Your arm mimics a horse’s neck and shows that you are in submission. This lets the horse know that you are not a threat to them.

Mount Confidently

Once you have gained the horse’s trust it is time to ride! The horse can sense your emotions so be sure to look and feel confident.

Begin on the left side of the horse. Hold both of the reins and place your left foot into the stirrup. Push yourself upward by engaging your core muscles and swing your right leg over to the other side of the horse in one smooth motion.
