Makarska Croatia

Makarska Croatia

Makarska Croatia is a resort town in central Dalmatia. Makarska, in Frank’s opinion, had all the qualities, to be one of the top destinations in Croatia. In a way, it is exactly that, but in a completely opposite way I would like it to be. Makarska is a small town with beautiful beaches. But it is a tourist nightmare in my opinion: too many people, crowded beaches, traffic jams, lack of parking, to mention just few. However, thousands of people come to this town every year for vacation.

Makarska Croatia: Air view

If you like buzzing beaches, hustle and bustle of a vibrant summer resort, this is a nice place to spend a vacation. Its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear sea, mountainous inland, and short hop to the nearby islands are all great reasons to visit this tourist resort.

Makarska Croatia at a glance

Best time to visit is summer. This is a small and sleepy town for the good part of the year, but in the summer everything comes into life.

Makarska Croatia: The main square

Accommodation in Makarska Croatia: Makarska is a queen of apartment rentals. There is a joke that houses in the town don’t have roofs because owners always plan to build one additional floor with another apartment to rent. The choice of apartments is vast. But the quality is vast as well. With so many apartments to rent, my advice is to read as many reviews as possible before deciding to book one . If you notice that in some apartments a/c is often reported broken, the chance it is broken on purpose is huge. One word: avoid. Take your time and choose wisely. You are able to find a nice apartment with good location and a friendly host. You just need to study the market well. Beside apartments to rent, there are big hotels and smaller family-run hotels. Major hotel company in the town is still state owned. You’ll probably be better off at the small family-run hotel.

Makarska Croatia: Beaches

Beaches, oh beaches in Makarska. Simply the best in the entire Croatia. And not one out of 100, but all 100 of them. The town and its riviera boasts some of the best beaches, and not only in Croatia, but in the world. This is my opinion, anyway. They are white pebble beaches, with beautiful turquoise seas.

Food in Makarska: The town is definitely not a mecca for foodies. I don’t have one single restaurant here that I would happily recommend. Tavern Kalelarga is probably the closest to be recommended. However, there are decent pizza & grill eateries where you’ll not pay too much for a meal.

Makarska Croatia: View of the town and the mountain

Transportation: Makarska is small and the best way to explore it is by cycle or on foot. Another good way to move around is by boat (just rent one!). Parking can be a problem, so I wouldn’t recommend you to use your own car in the town. Still, it would be good to have one if you would like to explore the surroundings. Biokovo mountain is beautiful, inland villages as well, many offering great views over the riviera, islands and the sea. If you travel with a public transportation, the town is easily reachable by bus. There are also very good and frequent connections from Makarska to smaller tourist villages along the riviera.

Parking in Makarska can be a nightmare. There are just too many cars and not enough parking. The parking lots are divided in two zones. Parking in the first zone costs around 1.4 € per hour, but it is time limited parking (max. 1 hour). Parking in the second zone costs 1.1 € per hour. The problem is general lack of parking.
