Volunteering in the United States
As a volunteer in our nature conservation project in Arizona you get the chance to discover the fascinating US state and, at the same time, to actively contribute to protecting its impressive nature.
Arrival and orientation in Arizona
Depending on when you start your voluntary service in the Arizona nature reserves, you will either be collected from the airport in Phoenix by a member of staff from our partner organisation in North America or you will make your way to Flagstaff on your own. We are happy to help you in arranging your transfer.
Volunteer activities in the USA
The individual projects last from four to nine days, though some more remote projects may last several weeks. During this time you will be working up to ten hours per day. The projects involve different tasks: e.g. erosion control, erecting dry walls or new fences, maintaining footpaths or removing non-native plant species (neophytes).
Accommodation during your time in Arizona
Generally speaking, the university town of Flagstaff will be your base between projects. You will be accommodated in one of the volunteer houses in a shared room. On the days between projects the participants are responsible for feeding themselves and there is a kitchen for this in each house.
During the projects you will sometimes spend the night on camp sites with sanitary facilities, sometimes in the wild. Meals are always prepared by the group.
Leisure time as a volunteer
At the end of your project you will return to Flagstaff and will have three to six days off, depending on the duration of the preceding project. Between projects we would highly recommend that you explore the magnificent scenery in the area with other volunteers. There are plenty of opportunities for this: Bryce Canyon National Park, Zion Canyon National Park, California or Las Vegas. Purpose of the conservation project in Arizona
The spectacular scenery in the state of Arizona, in the south-west of the USA, is amongst the most beautiful and impressive landscapes in the United States. In Arizona there are many national and state parks, in addition to the Grand Canyon National Park, which are imposing nature reserves.
Arizona combines a multitude of awe-inspiring landscapes with impressive cultural diversity: vast deserts studded with cacti, breathtaking canyons and mountains as well as dense green forests, providing a habitat for numerous wild animals.
As a volunteer you can discover this beautiful spot on earth and, at the same time, contribute to preserving the fascinating nature.
