Discover the Jewish presence in Lisbon and history
This tour will take you through the Jewish presence in Lisbon, Portugal!
In late 15th century Jews had to respect a royal law of either conversion to Catholicism or departure from Portugal. In early 16th century the court of Inquisition will actually open doors in the heart of the city where they performed terrifying “acts of faith”. But there are still vestiges of the Jewish presence in Lisbon till the 16th century and other examples as helping Jewish run away to the USA during WW2.
Let’s visit Lisbon’s 100 year old synagogue, built in a hidden way because Catholic Church didn’t want people to learn about other religions but the Catholic one. Let’s then focus on the layout of Lisbon as we walk through the Jewish areas in the city such as Baixa downtown district. We’ll also visit the remaining little streets of the Jewish district in Alfama. As we go, I’ll let you know about Jewish roots in our culture.
Even if the Jewish presence is not very tangible, our history was quite significant. Come learn!

* The Synagogue visits are only from Monday to Thursday in the morning period. They close on Jewish and state holidays. But we can still have a taste of Jewish History and visit Lisbon Highlights

Estimated Local Cash Needed
20 Euro – The admission fee to enter the synagogue is 5€ per person (must be booked ahead).
In addition, if you would like to have a snack or lunch it can go from 5 € per person until 75 € per person if you choose a Seafood lunch with a nice wine in an exclusive chef’s restaurant

If you are a party of more than 2 I will be happy to rent a van or a bus. Or if you are 1 or 2 persons and wish more than a standard car with a separate driver, I can also provide for a full confort Mercedes car.
