You’ve ended your meeting early or decided to add a weekend in the Bavarian capital? Then here are some news and insider tips on how to spend 24 hours in Munich at its best. Not that there’s anything wrong with an overnight stay at the Bayerischer Hof or drinks at the Golden Bar, but variety is known to keep life exciting – and good for the work-life balance.

24 hours in Munich Theresa Grill Restaurant

Restaurant – kitchen charm with artifice

Inspired by the numerous museums and galleries in the immediate vicinity, interior designer Stephanie Thatenhorst combined Munich’s sense of style with a cosy kitchen ambience. Dry aged beef, pork and lamb from the visible cold storage or shimmering silver fish – all this is grilled over pure beechwood charcoal in the Theresa Grill Restaurant. Served with Bavarian cabbage, Parisian peas or homemade French fries. Even if you’re just thirsty, the well-curated wine and cocktail list will make you want to linger. Theresa Bar is namely considered one of the best bars in Munich.

Bar – The Duke’s New Drinks

Also one of the best bars in Munich: since opening in December 2015, Herzog Bar has become a much-loved hangout for all education drinkers. Where once Duke Wilhelm V. The Maxburg, where the Duke of Bavaria had the Maxburg built, is now home to flawless ice cubes and top-quality spirits. The bright hand-cast terrazzo floor, handmade sofas and ubiquitous brass elements create an adequate setting for high balls and light drinks. Particularly practical: the lounge area with charging station for laptop and smartphones – in case you want to go to the airport later on. We’re not sure if you’ll keep track of time at “Duke Punch” or “Cynar Cobbler” though.

Party – Helene loves you

No, we’re not talking about Helene Fischer. We mean Helene (from) Schwabing. In a former underground parking garage, Munich’s most epicurean district shows what it’s made of. The pop-art interior and excellent sound and lighting technology form the basis, while the bubbly-heavy drinks menu takes care of the rest. A night shift in Munich can hardly be more scenic at the moment. Party nights at P1 or Heart may not be passe, but Helene loves us, and we’re happy to reciprocate in light of the cultivated music selection.

24 hours in Munich Haus der Kunst

Culture – State of the Art in Munich

The Haus der Kunst in Altstadt-Lehel is a renowned center for contemporary art. As a public museum without a permanent collection, it is ideally suited for frequent flying visits; there is always something new to see. The program includes retrospectives, solo exhibitions and top-class lectures. Highlights in fall 2016 include the exhibition project “Postwar,” which highlights postwar art in a global context, or a large-scale retrospective of German artist Michael Buthe. Always recommended: A nightcap at the Golden Bar in the Haus der Kunst.

Galleries – Young Art Space by Karin Wimmer

If you’re thinking of acquiring art, you can top off your stay in Munich with a trip to Young Art Space. Together with guest curators from “Gruppe Koordinaten,” gallery owner Karin Wimmer presents a monthly rotation of emerging artists from the Munich scene. The atmosphere in which the established art of tomorrow can be experienced is correspondingly informal. The art historian, who holds a doctorate in art history, is also happy to advise interested parties on the procurement of other artists.

24 hours in Munich Fuenf Hoefe

Shopping – Hofisch Shopping

The open-air Five Courts complex offers plenty of choice – be it men’s wear, women’s wardrobe or interiors. On top of it all, you’ll find Germany’s only Armani cafe here. If you want a change from the big brands at Lodenfrey or Oberpollinger, you can easily spend your free afternoon here. Our recommendation for connoisseurs: an expert consultation at Pfeifen Diehl. In the walk-in humidor, cigars from Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Honduras and many other regions mature. Also a good address for classic men’s gifts from leather to stationery. You’re more likely to be looking for a fashionable gift for ladies? Then it’s worth taking a short detour to Slips am Gartnerplatz – if you haven’t already found what you’re looking for in the Funf Hofe, of course.

Hotel – Sweet life begins at the Isar river

Munich’s special flair is partly due to its geographical proximity to Italy. The view of Dolce Vita also makes the boutique hotel Cortiina its own. Within walking distance of Marienplatz, individually furnished rooms await business and vacation guests alike. Jura natural stone in the bathrooms, fresh flowers in every room, and dark bog oak that makes everything feel quite cozy. After all, the eye lives with. Comfortable natural rubber mattresses, excellent service and upscale gastronomy provide the substantial counterweight to the beautiful appearance of the Sixties. A prestigious place to stay even for longer stays.

Free surfing at the Eisbach wave

Meetings may be a mental feat, but don’t even begin to challenge your body. Munich has a special outdoor attraction for such plans: all year round you can surf at the Eisbach wave in the English Garden. Less experienced swimmers should start with the small Eisbach wave (one kilometer downstream). And for those who don’t want to stand on the boards, they can simply float down the Eisbach. By streetcar line 17 you then go back to Prinzregentenstrabe. Then you would be officially baptized Munich and can shine at home with a real adventure.
