How does the credit card comparison work?

First of all, you can specify your parameters so that you can find the credit card or debit card that best suits you and your needs. In our credit card calculator there are the following parameters:

1. Annual Euroland

What is your average annual turnover with your credit card?? Note that in this first step we are only talking about payments with Euro. Paying by credit card is free of charge with many providers in the euro area.

2. Annual sales in non-Euroland

What is your turnover in non-Euroland? In simpler terms, what is your average fare in other currencies?? This is especially interesting when traveling, because in many cases your normal giro card is not accepted. A credit card is indispensable for hotel bookings, rental car payments or in the restaurant, if you do not want to pay only with cash.

Credit card providers can charge fees for the use of the credit card in the non-Euro area. For payment, but also for the withdrawal of cash. This foreign currency fee is usually calculated by a fixed percentage of the amount paid or withdrawn.

3. Card company

Credit card companies are companies that provide the payment network for credit card payments and handle all transactions with the credit card.

The credit card companies should not be confused with the issuers. These are usually banks that cooperate with the companies. In some cases, however, the card company may also be the issuer.

You have a total of four choices in the credit card comparison, which are also the market leaders in the field of credit cards: American Express, Visa, Mastercard or all.

4. View / Status

Most credit cards are normal, classic credit cards without status or special features. However, there are also gold and platinum cards.

In contrast to the classic credit card, gold cards include a number of extras. customers can benefit from insurance, bonus programs and discounts, for example. In return, the fees are usually higher than those of the classic credit cards.

Platinum cards are not issued to everyone. In many cases, a high annual income and a correspondingly high turnover is a prerequisite. Customers have advantages such as a higher credit limit, better conditions, longer payment terms or attractive interest rates. In return, the fees are significantly higher.

In your credit card comparison, you can choose either all cards, gold cards only, platinum cards only or gold and platinum cards.

5. Payment method

Which payment method is suitable for you? Here you can choose between immediate debit from the account, a monthly invoice, the installment facility, prepaid or all payment methods.

  • With the immediate collection from the account, your credit card is directly linked to your current account. So if you pay something with your credit card, the amount will be debited directly from you without delay. Then it is actually a debit card with credit card functions.
  • The monthly bill is for charge credit cards. You make your sales, the provider advances you the money and at the end of the month you receive an invoice or a bill. the money is debited from your checking account.
  • The installment feature is possible with revolving credit cards. In principle, it works like a charge credit card, but at the end of the month you do not have to pay the full amount of your expenses. You pay off an installment credit quasi permanently, but it can be very expensive due to high interest rates.
  • The prepaid credit card works similarly to prepaid cell phone cards. You transfer your balance to the card beforehand and can then pay with it. You cannot overdraw the credit card and you will not be tempted to spend more than you have. a prepaid credit card is especially suitable for people who have a bad Schufa score.

Credit card comparison: What must a good credit card offer?

This credit card comparison compares individual credit card providers based on costs and ratings. Here we would like to give you a few additional tips that are important when selecting your credit card.

1. The annual fee

The annual fee is charged with some credit cards for the use of the card itself. This fee is comparable to the account maintenance fees for your current account. As already mentioned, there are many free credit cards.

But if you want a lot of extra services, you have to expect an annual fee. This can be a few euros or several thousand euros. The latter is often found with platinum cards, which also offer correspondingly attractive benefits and services.

2. Fees abroad

This fee is especially important for frequent travelers outside the euro area. Foreign currency fees of several percent are often charged for foreign currencies. There is not much you can do about these fees, except to make sure that they are as low as possible.

3. Fees for cash withdrawals

Some providers charge a fee for withdrawing cash at ATMs. This is then a few percent of the withdrawn amount. However, since this can add up quickly, you should make sure to choose a credit card or debit card that waives such fees. DKB, for example, offers you this option.

Alternatively, you can choose a card that allows a certain number of withdrawals free of charge if you don't withdraw cash that often. N26, for example, offers five free withdrawals per month with their Maestro debit card.

4. Debit interest on the credit line

If a credit card is in the red, debit interest is charged. At least when the full amount is not settled at the end of the month. These are in the range of 10 to 20 percent and are therefore not insignificant.

Even if a credit card tempts you to make a purchase, you should only spend money on it that you can be sure of paying off in full at the end of the month. Then you can avoid debit interest well.

Or you can deliberately choose a prepaid credit card or a debit card with credit card features. You can spend here only the money that you yourself have transferred to the credit card and “loaded” or “charged”. you have in your checking account.
