Coronavirus: Russia Is Taking Action to Ensure Safety at the Border

Russia has taken several actions to protect its citizens and the foreigners visiting the country from COVID-19. The government stated that they are not taking any risks.

Russian coronavirus restrictions include, for example, testing requirements and the temporary suspension of the issuance of all electronic visas. Keep reading to learn more.

COVID-19: Who Can Travel to Russia?

Travelers of all nationalities can now enter Russia providing they respect the country’s current COVID-19 entry restrictions, including the need to have a negative PCR test.

Passengers arriving from the following countries must meet an additional test requirement:

  • Armenia
  • Azerbaijan
  • Belarus
  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Tajikistan
  • Turkmenistan
  • Uzbekistan

These travelers must have a negative PCR test result with a green QR code obtained through the app ‘Traveling without COVID-19’. However, this does not apply to Russian nationals or citizens of Belarus.

Russian travel bans during COVID-19

At present, there are no travel bans for Russia in place for specific countries.

Suspensions and restrictions may change at short notice. Foreigners must make sure they have the latest information before making any travel arrangements.

Do I need to take a Covid-19 test before traveling to Russia?

Yes, all travelers entering Russia must present a medical certificate with a negative COVID-19 PCR test result. The test must be taken no more than 2 days before arrival.

Passengers transiting through Russia must also have recent negative PCR test results. This does not apply to Russian citizens.

Nationals of the Russian Federation and Belarus are exempt.

What documents does Russia require to enter under COVID-19?

To enter or transit Russia, passengers must have a negative PCR test certificate in Russian or English.

The document must be dated within 48 hours of arrival in Russia. Airlines require passengers to present the document before boarding. Pre-departure test rules apply to children of all ages and to vaccinated and unvaccinated visitors.

Passengers also need to complete an ‘Application Form’ and present it on arrival.

Travelers must check specific COVID-19 testing rules with their airline.

Is Russia Issuing Electronic Visas to Travel?

The issuance of electronic visas has been suspended in Russia to allow for better screening procedures against COVID-19. The suspension will remain in place until further notice.

However, Russia normally welcomes visitors. Until the pandemic hit, the government launched several initiatives to boost international tourism, including designing a new unified E-visa for eligible travelers to visit the entire country.

Russia confirmed a new online visa to enter the country on January 1st, 2021. It will be available as soon as the anti-COVID restrictions are lifted.
