Essential Apps that Every Traveler Needs

Essential Apps that Every Traveler Needs

I LIVE by this app. Maps.me allows you to download maps straight to your phone so you can navigate while offline. It’s easy to use, and it sure does save you from scouring McDonald’s for free wi-fi.

TripIt

TripIt organizes all of your flight information in one place. You can link the app to your inbox, and the app scans your email for flight and hotel reservations, then automatically adds your itinerary. My favorite feature of the app is how it shows how long your flight is, even when you’re offline. I love when I take a 3 hour flight and can see that I have 32 minutes left without having to calculate time zones in my head.

Workaway

The app, Workaway (also a website) is great for long-term travel. Hosts post about all kinds of work all over the world, and with a membership you can easily message them and apply. Most jobs pay with accommodation, maybe food, and maybe even some pocket change, but it varies. Jobs also vary from working at a farm, to watching children, to working in a hostel. I’ve used Workaway for hostel jobs in Alicante, Spain and Koh Phangan, Thailand.

I use been to keep track of the number of countries I’ve visited and how many more I still have to go. It’s super easy to use and I love crossing a border and immediately getting to cross if off via my been list. It counts countries by number, but also by percentage of the region or world that you’ve marked off.

Currency

Tired of using your calculator to figure out prices? Confused when you first arrive in another country and don’t understand the exchange rates? Never fear! The app Currency is here!

Seriously, I love this one because I can add up to 5 different currencies at once and compare. It really helps when you’re doing a short trip with several countries and different currencies all at once.

Trainline

This is my favorite app for traveling Europe. Trainline organizes all the different trains and buses in one place, even when you’re going through various countries. You can compare prices, routes, and departure/arrival stations. This app has saved my life.
