For many, a honeymoon in the South Seas is the epitome of a dream vacation. It is the destination that awakens wishes and dreams. The honeymoon is special and if not now, when? That's what many tell themselves before they finally decide on the non plus ultra honeymoon trip to the other side of the world. And it really is the other side of the world. Depending on flight connections, it can take up to 40 hours to sip your Mai Tai on the beach.

Tahiti

Tahiti belongs to French Polynesia. There is a Greater Tahiti – Tahiti Nui and the smaller Tahiti Iti – Little Tahiti. Geographically the islands belong to the archipelago of the Society Islands. The largest city is Papeete on Tahiti Nui where over 70% of the total population lives.

When is the best time to travel?

The climate is tropical humid. The average annual temperature is 26°C, with little difference between the months. The rainiest months are December and January. However, the rains – as usual in the tropics – are heavy and very short. Between August and September it actually stays dry.

Sights on Tahiti

There are no really great sights in Tahiti except for the nature. If you stay longer in Papeete, then you can stop by at the market. Actually, the island is more of a transportation hub to get to the other islands in the South Seas.

Honeymoon for sporty people – diving, surfing, fishing, sailing

Between June and October, the coral reef is home to an abundance of manta rays, and from July to November, humpback whales can be seen. From December to March hammerhead sharks swim through the reef. If you're lucky, you'll also see a dolphin or two and sea turtles.

For surfers Tahiti is a real hotspot: From May to November the north coast is recommended. The rest of the year the south coast is an ideal location for kite- and windsurfing. For all those who prefer it a little quieter, there are countless lagoons for sunbathing, lazing around and taking a walk. By the way, what not many people know: the white beaches are usually artificial, the few natural beaches are made of black basaltic sand.

Personal tip when buying souvenirs

Be sure to bring a tiare oil. The national plant of Tahiti is the tiare flower and it is used to make an all-purpose beauty oil. This is sold at markets and is usually filled in spirit bottles. I still have a Jack Daniels Red Label bottle 75cl from 2011. The stuff keeps well. At temperatures below 20 degrees the oil becomes hard. Don't worry no loss of quality.

Bora Bora:

The queen among the honeymoon islands. Bora Bora is about 4500km from the mainland – if you don't count Tahiti of course. The atoll is so isolated from the world that you feel you are truly alone. Well apart from the other countless newlyweds 😉 Here you are sold pure romance, but at least these are not empty promises. For it really is a little paradise on earth. Nothing like turquoise sea and white powder sand beach far and wide.

Tip for photographers and Instagrammers:

If you want to take nice photos from the air, you should sit on the left side during the approach in flight direction and on the right side during the takeoff.

The Le Meridien Bora Bora is a classic overwater bungalow hotel in the middle of the lagoon with windows in the floor. Finally you want to watch the fish swimming. And that from the bed. What else?

What must be in the suitcase?

Temperatures seldom fall below 27 degrees and the thermometer does not climb more than 31 degrees. You can leave long pants, jackets and sweaters at home. You will not need it. You don't need bathing shoes either, because the sand is velvety soft. The sea has bathtub temperature of about 28-30 degrees. Don't forget your diving goggles and snorkel. Or rent.

Round trip on Bora Bora

Moorea:

Moorea is the smaller sister island of Tahiti and only 17 km away. Arriving from Tahiti by plane is highly recommended. The flight takes just 10 minutes and is a great experience.
