Josh reveals his own personal Manchester Insider tips – the best activities, bars, restaurants where you turn night into day and where to greet the morning. Experience Manchester like a local and fall in love with it immortal in the legendary northern English city.
I am Manchester Insider because …
I was born here, have always lived here, studied here and now I lead visitors and tourists around here. I do not know the answer to all the questions, but I certainly know someone who knows them. I give my answers and tips as they come to my mind … there are probably a lot of things and places that I forgot or omitted, in advance in advance: Sorry!
The best place for a date in Manchester
- The HOME has a nice bar and the atmosphere is very relaxed there. There is also a gallery, a theater and a cinema if you feel like adventure.
- The Frog and Bucket has Comedy on Monday evenings, admission free.
- At Twenty Two you can play table tennis
- In the Hold Fast Bar there are board games and retro V >

The best place for a teatime in Manchester
Do not forget: in the north of England “Teatime” means dinner! My top tip is a new location that has just opened, called Just Between Friends. The Takk is a good place to meet people, with a painfully cool workforce and really exceptional coffee Josh actually said, “painfully cool.” If someone has a better German equivalent for it, gladly come here).
Where are you going to drink coffee in Manchester?
These three cafes make very good coffee and there you can work relaxed:
Also in Chapter One Books the coffee tastes good and there is also a very nice bookstore there. There are so many more good places to have tea or coffee in Manchester – just leave it in Northern Quarter drive and see what turns you on.
The best place to relax in Manchester
It totally depends on the weather.
- The Whitworth Park Art Gallery is located in a park and offers a very nicely decorated shelter from rain. The building was nominated for the Stirling Prize a few years ago.
- Sackville Gardens is always and perfect to hang out when the weather is nice.
- The same goes for the Parsonage Gardens.
- Also nice: the Castlefield canals: here it is ‘typical Manchester’ and there is also a nice beer garden.

The best bookstore in Manchester
To be honest, Manchester disappointed a little when it comes to bookstores. I really like the bookstore in the People’s History Museum (mostly leftist political books). If you are interested in books, you should definitely the Rylands Library, Cheetham’s Library, Portico Library and Central Library visit – here you can look at old books in a breathtaking environment.
The best breakfast in Manchester
In my opinion, there is the nicest and hippest breakfast in these three cafes:
But if you want a real Manchester Breakfast, then The Koffee Pot is the place of choice: this Manchester institution serves nice, fatty English Breakfast at a good price.
The best dinner restaurant in Manchester
You mean ‘tea’! There are countless places in Manchester, my recommendations are based solely on my personal taste
- Rudy’s and Double 00 are famous for their pizza
- Almost Famous and Solita make good burgers
- In 1847 and Greens great vegetarian food is served
- Mughli is my favorite Indian restaurant.
Cheap food in Manchester
Cheap lunch in Manchester:
Cheaper dinner in Manchester: In the evening I would definitely get a pizza from HOME.
The best local pub in Manchester
Hach, I do not know … there are so many. I like pubs. This one for example:

The best place to go chic in Manchester
Hmm, I’m not sure about the “chic”, but Soup Kitchen has an extremely good bar on the upper floor and a very good sound system in the basement – there’s a monthly event called ‘Kiss Me Again’.
clubs & Discos in Manchester
For indie and post punk, I recommend The Star & Garter, where the legendary ‘Smiths Disco’ takes place. If you’re into ’80s music, the’ Girls on Film ‘event at the Deaf Institute is perfect.
Jazz, bands & Concerts in Manchester
Im Matt & During the week, Phreds offers the free Jazz Night (and there’s beer and pizza for a fiver), and at the Night and Day Café, local bands often play for a slender thaler. If you are more into bargaining, the Northern Quarter is the place for you.
Shopping tip for Manchester – here I leave my money
Magma on Oldham Street. And nobody comes around the Afflecks. Avoid the Arndale Center and Market Street if possible. If you like to go shopping (which I do not) then take the bus and go to the Trafford Center – a kind of temple capitalism.
This attraction should not be missed in Manchester
The typical answer is: John Rylands Library. But I say: Free Manchester Walking Tours. Or the Royal Exchange Theater – a beautiful, public place with a theater that plays the most modern and progressive pieces in the country. And the tickets are totally affordable.
Here I go with my friends
Probably Molly House – because my choir likes to hang out here! If we are not here then most likely in the bar in the HOME.
If I do not fancy city, then I go here
Day trips to the surrounding area of Manchester:
Deadly Murders and Hebden Bridge. These are quaint little towns that are only a short train ride away, with small shops, art and lesbians. I’m serious.

3 words that describe Manchester
swaggering – loving – raining
No tourist goes there – nevertheless, my recommendation
Walk along the canals towards Etihad stadium and look into the industrial past.
Joshua Val Martin, born and bred in Manchester, is a playwright and founder of the Free Manchester Walking Tours. In his free time he likes to sing in choir and comes every year to the Berlinale in Berlin.
