Who can get child benefit?

  • German citizens who live in Germany with their children
  • German nationals abroad who are not employed there
  • foreign nationals residing in Germany only under certain conditions
  • Parents and adoptive parents
  • under certain conditions also foster parents, grandparents, siblings and step parents

How do I have to apply for child benefit??

Child benefit is a state benefit. It is therefore imperative that you submit an application as soon as your child is born. According to Section 67 of the Income Tax Act, you must apply for the benefit in writing from your family fund. In order to apply for child benefit, you need your tax identification number and that of your child. In contrast to the past, the presentation of a birth certificate is no longer necessary.

However, if you are employed in the public service, you must submit an application for child benefit to your compensation office.

The application is made once. Child benefit is paid until your child reaches the age of majority.

But you are also entitled to child benefit for a child of legal age if he has not yet completed any vocational training or has not yet completed a degree. The age limit is 25.

Checks of the requirements

The conditions for this are checked at regular intervals while the child benefit is being granted. The family fund checks whether the children may be abroad or still live in the household and whether the studies or school or vocational training are still ongoing. As a beneficiary of child benefit, you are obliged to cooperate with the information.

Is there a limitation period for the child benefit entitlement??

Child benefit is generally time-barred after 4 years. But since 2018, the deadline for retroactive payout has shortened significantly. The applications are taken into account in the assessment process, but the money is paid out in the collection process 6 months before the family fund receives the application.
