  • Children’s guitars are available in different sizes. In addition to children’s guitars 1/2, sizes such as children’s guitars in 1/4 can also be found. Instead of the age recommendation, the guitar should be selected according to the size of the child.
  • Children’s guitars are only suitable for children from the age of 4. For younger children there are children’s guitars as toys on which they can pluck. However, toy guitars are not suitable for recording and cannot be tuned.
  • With children’s guitars, it is worth buying a children’s guitar set. In addition to a guitar book with learning CDs, other accessories such as a tuner, a guitar bag (gigbag) or picks are included here, which no longer need to be purchased.

In order for a child to reach its full potential, it should be encouraged early on. While playing memory trains the memory, musical instruments address the creativity of the little ones.

A survey by TNS Emnid in 2010 showed that 91% of all Germans think so are that the Music lessons for children is so important because it promotes children’s emotional and intellectual ability. But what is even more important: making music is fun; Big and small.

If you want to bring your child closer to the love of music at home or have already found it, we advise you to buy a guitar for children. These are Specially designed for the sizes of children and take up much less space in your home than a drum kitor a keyboard.

In our children’s guitar comparison 2019/2020, we recorded how to find the right size for your children’s guitar, what the difference between the children’s guitars and toy guitars is and which accessories should be included in a children’s guitar set.

1. Buying advice: You can recognize the best children’s guitar by the size of your child

Music with restrictions

Learning a musical instrument does not always sound good, especially at the beginning. If children want to play music in a tenement house, the music also affects their neighbors.

In its article 10/2017, the Stiftung Warentest summarized what children are allowed to do in a rental house and what not. They also took a closer look at the house music.

It was found here that children can play an instrument. The duration of the practice depends on the instrument. Quieter instruments (e.g. children’s guitars) allowed to about an hour and a half to two hours a day.

In a children’s guitar test, the Stiftung Warentest has not yet identified which guitar is best suited for this. A children’s guitar comparison winner is therefore also missing.

Children’s guitars not only look like shrunk concert guitars, they are too. The guitars are completely similar both in structure and in the number of strings. Only the string spacing, the width of the neck and the size of the guitars were adapted for children.

In your search for the cheapest children’s guitars for your child, you will therefore be on Size specifications such as 1/2, 3/4 or 7/8 come across. The division is mainly based on the scale length of the guitar (this means the length of the vibrating guitar strings).

There is no uniform table of the age and size from which a child should play a 3/4 size children’s guitar, for example, however, most of the lists overlap strongly, so that a rough division is possible.

So it can be said, that a children’s guitar 1.2 is suitable for children from an approximate size of 1.20 and 1.40 meters (approx. 7-9 years). A children’s guitar with a 3/4 size, on the other hand, is suitable from a size of approx. 1.30 and 1.50 meters (approx. 10-13 years).

Children grow at different speeds. Before you buy the wrong children’s guitars, you should remember that children with 10 years do not necessarily have to be 1.30 meters tall. We therefore advise you, when choosing the children’s guitar not according to the age information, but according to the suitable child size to decide.

For a first overview, we have created a general table for you, according to which you can choose the right children’s guitar size for your child.

2. Toy guitars are suitable for children up to three years old; Children from the age of four take a children’s guitar

Children are always enthusiastic when it comes to trying something new. Your natural ability to acquire knowledge faster than adults also helps you, to learn to play the guitar as a toddler. Still, they should do not start playing a real children’s guitar before the age of four.

It is only from this age that the children’s hands are large enough to grip the neck of a children’s guitar well and grip the strings. Do you want your child already? Before you can bring the fun of playing the guitar closer, you can use toy guitars. These are offered by the manufacturer Simba, among others.

Before you buy such a guitar type for your child, you should be aware that these are not played in the same way as concert guitars for children.

For a better understanding of the differences, we have taken a closer look at both types of guitar for you and summarized their advantages and disadvantages.

As long as the toy guitars are not operated electrically, guitars for children under the age of four rarely get good tones.

2.1. Children’s guitars for 3 year olds are toy guitars

With toy guitars it is possible for you to access different guitar categories. Except for acoustic guitars some manufacturers also offer toy guitars in the form of electric guitars or with cutaway (hollowing out the guitar body on the neck).

A toy guitar does not have to be a concert guitar. Here you can choose between different types of guitars.

The toy guitars are available with four or six strings. In comparison with real children’s guitars, this type of guitar cannot step up. Because it is neither tuning the strings nor actually playing the guitar.

So for some brands your child can only pluck the strings without producing real music other toy guitar batteries to play additional music.

If you plan to buy a toy guitar, we advise you to pay close attention to the material. Just Electric toy guitars are often made of plastic and have metal strings. The disadvantage of the strings is that Metal is much harder than nylon and can therefore cut into your child’s fingers. This can make your child uncomfortable playing the guitar and lose his or her desire for a real guitar.

Instead of an electric children’s guitar as a toy, we recommend one instead Toy guitar in the form of an acoustic guitar. Although these can not be played properly, there are brands here, their Guitars are made of wood and with nylon strings. In addition, you can introduce your child to their first real children’s guitar and familiarize them with the shape of the acoustic guitar.

The Advantages and disadvantages of toy guitars at a glance:

  • available as electric guitar and acoustic guitar
  • promotes enthusiasm for the guitar
  • in a lot of bright colors and with different motifs available
  • needs batteries for operation in some cases
  • Steel strings harder and uncomfortable for children’s hands to grip
  • Material for electric guitars mainly made of plastic
  • Strings cannot be tuned
  • correct play is not possible

In contrast to toy guitars, children’s guitars are tuned and really played. With a little practice, your child will soon be able to play your first songs here.

2.2. Children’s guitars are always acoustic guitars

Different than the toy guitar are Children’s guitars only concert guitars. So you don’t have a large selection here with regard to the type of guitar. However, if your child chooses a different guitar type over the years, this can of course be changed. Before buying another guitar, you should inquire which size fits your child best.

Since nylon is quite soft, the strings do not press uncomfortably into your child’s fingers when playing.

The advantage that this type of guitar brings with it brings, is, that you is designed for recording and the children’s guitar strings can be tuned. In contrast to guitars, which serve as toys, this type of guitar does not require batteries to produce sounds.

Guitars for children ages 4 and up are also made of wood and in most cases have nylon strings. In contrast to steel strings, nylon strings are softer and more pleasant to play. They are therefore well suited for beginners.

The Advantages and disadvantages of children’s guitar at a glance:

  • correct play possible
  • does not need a battery
  • Children’s guitars are made of wood and have nylon strings
  • with the children’s guitar it is possible to tune the strings
  • only available as concert guitar
  • no different motives
  • can only be played from 4 years

Practice creates masters:

How long your child practices should be dependent on age. Generally it is said, that children from the age of 4 can practice continuously for about 10 – 15 minutes. In addition, experience has shown that your child can no longer concentrate and loses the fun of the guitar.

If you notice that your child is enjoying playing the guitar, you can practice again for 10 – 15 minutes after a break (approx. 1 hour).

3. In a good children’s guitar set you will find not only a guitar book but also a tuner

4. Questions and answers about children’s guitars

4.1. As an adult, I could also play a 3/4 guitar to show my child a few handles?

As a rule, that’s fine. However, keep in mind that the string spacings on a children’s guitar are shorter than on a normal concert guitar for adults. Correctly gripping the strings will be much more difficult for you here.

If you have your own guitar, we advise you to show the handles on it. This has the additional advantage that your child can imitate them on their guitar straight away.

That’s fine. Both the manufacturer Ortega and the manufacturer Yamaha offer such 1/8 guitars. In the case of Ortega, the guitar is even referred to as Giutarlele.

This small type of guitar represents a hybrid of guitar and ukulele. This means that it is played exactly like a guitar, whereby its size is particularly suitable for toddlers from 4 years and has the sound of a ukulele.
