Category information

Key facts at a glance:

  1. Isofix reduces the risk of making a mistake during installation
  2. most Isofix seats can also be strapped
  3. Several Isofix seats offer a top tether instead of a support leg – ideal for vehicles with a floor storage compartment
  4. Isofix is more expensive than belt-mounted seats, but often just as safe
  5. not every seat fits in every car – some are only approved for certain vehicles, depending on the type
  6. The main advantage of Isofix for older age groups is safe empty trips

The first Isofix system was launched by Britax-Römer in cooperation with VW and is now, more than 40 years later, the global standard for child car seats. But if parents looking around for a suitable child seat today, there is still uncertainty. Too many different systems with harness or Isofix, base or support leg and terms such as reboarder, top tether and universal approval have hardly brought clarity. Why is there still no Isofix child seats on the market that fit universally in every car despite the technical consensus of the vehicle manufacturers and countries on the construction of the Isofix hooks and matching counter eyelets of the vehicles? Wouldn’t that be much safer for children? We try to provide you with answers.

Take the Maxi-Cosi with FamilyFix, for example: The Isofix holder for baby car seats and toddler car seats engages in the vehicle’s eyelets and remains firmly in the vehicle. (Image source: amazon.de)

Isofix seats are easier to use, but also more expensive

Isofix child seats, which you can connect directly and firmly to the vehicle, are particularly recommended for baby seats for the first few months of life. With Isofix, it is much easier to remove and insert a baby seat; the belt operation with threading the child and seat is no longer necessary, the seat is simply connected to the Isofix base using a click system, which remains firmly in the car. A decisive advantage lies in the reduction of operating errors, especially with a view to the fact that sometimes people operate the child seats who are not familiar with the system.

The only problem is: Not every Isofix car seat, not each Base fits in every car. Parents are therefore required to contact the manufacturer or take a look at the vehicle type list. Because although you can expect a fixed, standardized connection between the seat and the car in an Isofix child seat, there are still only a few Isofix seats with universal approval for every vehicle. That means: Before buying a child seat, you have to laboriously search the manuals and lists of the car seat manufacturers to see whether the child seat of your choice really fits the Isofix brackets of your family car.

Attention: Child car seats with so-called semi-universal approval (e.g. child seats with support feet) do not fit in all vehicles. These child seats have a type list with which you can check whether the model can be used in your car. The ADAC recommends always observing the instructions of the seat manufacturer and the instructions in the manual of your vehicle when installing the seat. One of the most important things when buying a child seat: Drive your child and car to the specialist dealer and have the fit and operation of the Isofix seats demonstrated in practice.

A tether at the top of the seat, known as a top tether, can prevent the head from being moved forward in the event of a front impact. Many Isofix seats instead offer a support foot for stabilization. (Image source: amazon.de)

Top Tether problem: Not all vehicles have a third anchor point

So if you don’t have a vehicle with such an additional fixed point, you have to opt for the more cumbersome, usually less secure standard solution and fasten your (Isofix) child seat with a seat belt. Another no less unsatisfactory circumstance are the car manufacturers’ release locks for Isofix bases with support feet in cars with storage compartments in the footwell. Technical solutions are fillers (from VW, for example) or support feet that can be extended particularly far to the bottom of the open storage compartment in order to securely support the child seat. But unfortunately, the following also applies here: Parents cannot avoid looking very carefully using the approval lists before buying.

Isofix child seats with safety quirks – there are also?

As a negative example is the Hauck iPro Baby with iPro Base, a modern baby seat with i-size approval for children up to 85 cm tall. This baby car seat consists of two parts – a base that is firmly connected to the body of the vehicle via Isofix locking arms. And secondly from the baby seat itself, which you can attach to the base in a removable manner. The goods testers rated the car seat as “poor” overall: increased risk of injury in the dummy test with simulated front impact, but above all too many pollutants, the ADAC child seat test said. The child seat is not particularly stable in the vehicle and cannot be operated safely. As if there was no end to the horror, the testers also criticized the high weight, the high space requirement in the car and the limited space available for the child.

Comparative tests reveal other test failures, where only a “poor” could express how bad the quality of Isofix child seats can be. According to test results, it is not advisable to use the Uppababy Mesa i-Size (with and without i-Size base), which did not fail in the test due to lack of safety, but because of its high level of pollutants. For example, the upholstery fabrics contained the flame retardant TCPP in a concentration that exceeded the limit for toys in Directive 2014/79 / EU.

Not sure if with or without Isofix? – According to Stiftung Warentest, it sits equally well in these child seats:

Sounds like high-tech, but it is practical and extremely useful in everyday life: Maxi-Cosi Pearl One i-Size reboarder car seat, suitable for the FamilyFix One i-Size base station. The product testers rated the reboarder as “good” for children up to 105 cm tall. (Image source: amazon.de)
