Operator’s liability at the gas station

When you arrive at the pump, the gas station operator asks your host what he can think of. Why, he reports – not aware of any fault, the manufacturer of the gas cylinder has approved the filling and it is also approved for this purpose. However, the gas station operator tells him in no uncertain terms that any filling by private persons at the gas station prohibited was – no matter if the bottle had an approval or not.

the host looks puzzled and sees his garden party already falling into the water. But: is the gas station operator right??

DVFG clarifies

Yes, according to a technical information of the german association of liquid gas (DVFG) the filling station operator is right. German service stations are subject to the German ordinance on industrial safety and health (betrsichv), which in turn is specified in the technical regulations (TRBS).

The TRBS clearly state that it is forbidden to fill liquid gas cylinders at filling stations. It doesn’t matter whether the gas cylinder is supposedly approved or not, and it certainly doesn’t matter whether it is suitable for this purpose.

This prohibition applies for all liquid gas cylinders used in germany, regardless of whether they weigh 5, 8, 11 or 33 kilograms. Incidentally, this also applies in many parts of europe. This is an important tip for campers, because there are always stories circulating that you can fill your gas cylinders anywhere in the world without hesitation.

No matter which gas cylinder you have in use, under no circumstances may you fill it yourself with autogas at the filling station. Please be sure to contact the authorized personnel at the filling station.

A special case are liquid gas tanks permanently installed in a vehicle, i.e. a caravan or motor home. In contrast to standard gas cylinders, they have a special filling connection, why the camper can also supply itself with liquid gas at LPG filling stations.

While campers are not allowed to fill their gas cylinders themselves under any circumstances, the situation is different for gas tanks permanently installed in the motor home or caravan
