The service for underage children traveling alone

Our service for underage children traveling alone ensures that your child can travel safely. This service must be booked for children aged 5 to 14 years of age traveling alone or children traveling in a class other than yours as a parent or accompanying adult.

Before and after arrival, your child will be accompanied to and from the aircraft by our KLM employees or by KLM employees, even in the event of a delay. During the flight, your child will be looked after by our stewardesses and stewards. We will inform you by phone, email or SMS if your child’s flight schedule changes. At the end of the trip, we will take your child personally to the person you picked up.

The service is optional for children aged 15 to 17 years. If you do not book the service for underage children traveling alone, your child will be considered an adult passenger. In the event of a flight delay or cancellation, we are always happy to help if your child tells our KLM staff their age and says that they need help. For assistance in the event of flight interruptions, however, you should book the service for underage children traveling alone.

Modalities of service for underage children traveling alone

Book

You must book the flight for a child traveling alone, along with the service for underage children traveling alone, at least 24 hours before departure. This service cannot be booked separately from the flight and can only be booked through the KLM customer contact center or your travel agency.

When booking the service, we need information about your child and your contact details. We also need information about the person who will take your child to the airport on departure and the person who is authorized to collect your child on arrival. Make sure you have prepared all the information when booking the service. We use this information to fill out the Handling Advice form, which your child will have with him throughout his journey.

Prepare and check in

For a child traveling alone, you must fill out an approval form before passing through the security area. Read more here about the approval form for minors traveling abroad hier (only in English). In addition, additional regulations may apply to children traveling alone in some countries. Please inform yourself in advance about the local regulations of the destination.

In order to be able to accompany your child during his trip, you must authorize us to do so by handing us the Handling Advice form at the check-in counter at the airport. You must submit 4 completed and signed copies of the form for each flight on the booking. Fill out the online form via My Trip or online check-in. After checking in, changes to the form can only be made by telephone via the KLM customer contact center. Please bring the latest version of the form with you to the airport and sign all copies.

Didn’t you fill out the form online? You can also print out the form and fill it in by hand. You can also fill it out at the check-in desk, but please allow about 15 minutes more.

When checking in online, you will receive a check-in confirmation, but no boarding pass. You can get your boarding pass at the check-in desk at the airport.

A parent or companion (18 years or older) must take the child to the check-in desk at least 2.5 hours before departure. The person, who Your child to Accompanied to the airport, must carry a valid ID document and remain at the airport until the child’s flight has started.

Departure from Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport

At Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, check-in for underage children traveling alone is either at counter 8 in departure hall 1 (for European flights) or counter 16 in departure hall 2 (for intercontinental flights). After receiving your boarding pass and checking in your luggage, you must accompany the child to the service desk for underage children traveling alone, located between departure hall 1 and departure hall 1a. Please note that you must be there at least 75 minutes before departure.

If you have a long transfer time at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport, we will take your child to our Junior Jet Lounge. Here he or she can enjoy a refreshing drink and have a good time with drawing, toys and computer games and watch the latest films. There is also the possibility to just relax on one of the bean bags and read a nice book (in different languages).

KLM only allows transfers for minors traveling alone on KLM, Air France and Delta Air Lines flights. If you have any questions, please contact the KLM customer contact center.

Arrivals

On arrival, we will take your child to the authorized pick-up person specified on the handling advice form. This person must bring a valid ID document. We will not leave your child to a representative of a company or organization.

costs

Regardless of the age of your child, the service for children traveling alone costs as much as a ticket for one Adults plus a service surcharge. The exact amount of the service charge for one-way flights can be found in the table below. The surcharge for return flights is doubled. For up to 4 children in a booking, the fee for minors traveling alone is charged only once. They can be relatives, provided that they have the same booking code.

Please note that the below Prices be converted into the national currency. In some countries an additional local tax can be levied.
