The event will take place in Sankt Augustin (see description for information on accommodation and joint trips).

What are the FrogLabs?

  • Do you like to play computer games and would you like to program one?
  • Do you find robots or electrical circuits exciting?
  • Would you like to produce a beat or a cartoon yourself?
  • Do you enjoy spending time with other kids and camping?

The FrogLabs are a workshop program for children and teenagers from 9 to 16 years of age. Together with many other like-minded people at your age, you can tinker, research and learn on exciting projects in the fields of computer science and technology.

You will spend an exciting and entertaining weekend in the form of free time with a group of many students who share your interests. The overnight stay together with an evening programme offers many opportunities to make new friends.

If you want to know how it went last time, you can have a look at the report from 2018.

When and where do the FrogLabs take place?

The FrogLabs always take place together with so-called Open Source conferences. These are meetings where many people talk about topics like free software, programming, security and much more. The FrogLabs originate from the FrOSCon, the conference with probably the most extensive children and youth program in Germany.

This time FrogLabs will take place at FrOSCon in Sankt Augustin from 8th to 11th August 2019. The FrOSCon and the workshop program of the FrogLabs itself will start on Saturday, August 10th, but Thursday and Friday you already have the possibility to participate in an introductory workshop and to barbecue together with the other participants, to stay overnight on the youth campground and then on Saturday morning to the Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences and the workshops.

Workshops that await you

The workshops that await you at FrogLabs are aimed at all participants equally. No matter whether you already know a lot about the topic or have even been to FrogLabs before. Our goal is that everyone can have the same amount of fun at the workshops and contribute the same amount.

For everyone who’s been there before: All new and old participants get the opportunity to deal with different topics. Even participants who have been to FrogLabs before will not be bored.

And these workshops await you:

  • Programming games (with PyGame)
  • Electronics (e.g. microcontrollers and circuits with MicroPython)
  • Robotics (e.g. with LEGO Mindstorms and NXC)
  • Creative (e.g. producing beats or cartoons)

You don’t have to decide on a workshop when you register. The young tutors, who are themselves children and teenagers of your age, show their workshops to all participants on Fridays, and only then does everyone choose their workshop.

You can get to know the tutors who lead the workshops on the page about our members.

Previous knowledge (or not)

No previous knowledge is required for the workshops. However, you are welcome to get involved with the topics beforehand – it is especially helpful if you have already learned something about programming, preferably with the programming language Python. We recommend the book Hello World.

Weekend free time and overnight stay

In our time together there will not only be workshops, but there will also be an extensive social supporting programme. This includes:

  • Barbecue, eating and playing together on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening
  • Overnight stay on the youth campground in Bonn (see below)
  • Common breaks (bouncy castle, ball pool, etc.)

The supporting programme including the overnight stay is very important for all participants, including those coming from Bonn or the surrounding area. In addition to the technical topics, the leisure time also serves the development of a community.

This year we have free time on Thursday evening and Friday. This means that we have more time than in the last years to play together and get to know the others.

Overnight stay on the youth campground Bonn

The youth campground Bonn is not only a campground, but a large youth home with a large outdoor area, common rooms, washrooms and dormitories. There is also a tent rental. So there are the following possibilities:

  • Overnight stay in own tent, with friends or new children
  • Overnight stay in the group tent which we provide for you
  • Overnight stay in dormitory

Since the places in the dormitories are very limited, everyone should sleep in a tent if possible. The places in the dormitories are intended for children who are afraid of sleeping outside (anyone can openly admit that this is not a bad thing!).

Please enter one of the following options in the comment field when registering:

  • I bring my own tent and X more children can stay overnight in my tent (friends OR new children)
  • I would like to have a place in one of the group tents
  • I have to sleep in the dormitory.

Of course, in the event of a thunderstorm, rescue is provided for: in this case, everyone can sleep in their backpacks in the common room.

Timing

Free time starts on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at 3 p.m. at the youth campground in Bonn.

The event ends on Sunday, August 11, 2019, at 6 p.m. with the final presentation at the Bonn-Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences.

Costs and registration

The free time costs a total of 70 €. This includes overnight stays, meals (full board), workshops and all trips (train trip to the campground). The price is cost-covering – your participation fee covers the costs for meals, trips, material and campground, but also the expenses for the preparatory weekends of the tutors and the organisation team.

If it is not possible for you to pay the full fee, please contact us. This is not bad at all and we will find a solution together.

Should it be possible for you to pay a higher contribution, we would be pleased about a voluntary additional amount. With this we can support children who do not have so much money available and above all finance our preparations.

Registration is possible via the above linked registration form.

Each child registers independently (of course together with their parents). Registration by parents on behalf of their children is not possible!
