Our diaper free baby

The Stone Age is often used as a justification when it comes to the coexistence of man and woman and their distribution of tasks. It is still not really clear how people lived then. However, it makes a lot of sense to deal with the topic of cleanliness of babies times with the Stone Age. Because one thing is certain: Pampers did not exist back then. Children were therefore educated “diaper free”. Nevertheless, probably was not permanently everything vollgekackt and vollgepackt. Because that would not have been conducive to living with a baby …

The principle diaper free

The answer is: the babies were held. And that’s when they have to do pee or kacka. That sounds amazing at first, because we all know that even older children have “accidents” and occasionally shit. How should the cleanliness work then with babies.

The theory is that infants have a natural need to keep their environment clean from birth. By environment is meant: the womb of the mother or the person holding and carrying the baby, the mattress on which the baby lies and the sleeping place.

That a baby must urinate or shit, you can see him in most cases. Every child has individual signs. Some babies make a particular sound when the bladder is full, others writhe or become restless. The challenge for parents (or caregivers) is to recognize the signs and observe them in everyday life.

This requires practice and does not always work. Who decides to educate his baby without diaper, so usually decides also for a lot of laundry and much wipe …

My way to diaper free

At the discharge meeting in the hospital after the birth of our first child, I learned from the gynecologist that you can educate children without diapers. I heard about it for the first time. I was very interested in the puerperium then read the two books that she has recommended to me:

  • It can also be done without diapers by Ingrid Bauer
  • TopfFit! by Laurie Boucke
  • Also quite helpful is the large community of diaper parents on Facebook

Unfortunately, our son did not show his urge to urinate at all. Or we simply did not interpret the signals correctly. I do not know. Anyway, we had no success at all and soon stopped keeping the little worm constantly over the sink.

In the second pregnancy, I then read the book species-appropriate and reminded me of our first diaper free attempts. Inspired by this book I have decided to hold the second child at least in so-called standard initiatives on suspicion: After breastfeeding and after sleeping. Very many babies have to pee or kacka exactly then.

Our diaper-free baby

Only a few hours after the birth I had the first success. Our little daughter moved weirdly in her cot next to me and I just tried it out. The roommate was completely exhausted when she saw the phenomenal Kackwurst that my little girl then fabricated as if at Komando. It was actually the other way around: She had given me the command: Stop me, I have to!

Influenced by this success, I’ve been mostly lucky ever since. There are bad days when most of it goes wrong or in the diaper I put on for safety. But many times a day we hold them over a small bowl, over the sink or into the bushes. It sounds weird, but it’s really fun.

Little Frida is a wonderfully relaxed child. This can have many reasons. But I think one reason for her calm nature is that we can communicate so well with her. Because we not only recognize their urgency in their movements, but also tiredness and boredom and can respond accordingly. This makes life with a baby so much easier! And I am very happy about that. I think that above all diaper free has promoted this good communication.

The difference between diaper babies and nappy free babies

That this variant of cleanliness education is called “diaper free” is actually misleading. Most of the diaper-free children still wear diapers. In the scene of the diaper parents this is called “backup”. That’s just for safety, because it often goes something wrong. Also, we do not actually save diapers, because our little cemlich often makes a “wet pups”, so you have to dispose of the diaper, or wash …

But the holding is in the foreground. As a result, Nappy Free children always wear clothes that can be taken off quickly – at least down the line. Bodies are not so common in the scene. Or be sewn accordingly. Many nappy free parents use cloth diapers as a backup because they focus on the environment (saving disposable diapers). We use alternating cloth diapers and disposable diapers. Depending on where we are and how it works for us. We do not make any dogma out of it.

Diaper Free Babies are often more relaxed than other babies because they communicate better with their parents. It also states that flatulence and constipation are less common, as the digestive system and excretory system are not considered something disgusting and annoying, but something that accompanies the family with fun.

The whole family goes with diaper free

Anyway, fun is an important issue if you want to educate your baby diaper-free. It works only if both parents (and ideally also the other people in need of assistance) support the principle. You just have to feel like watching the child closely. You have to get involved in the laundry mountains, which will accumulate pretty sure. And you have to be tough, because a diaper-free family will inevitably face many questions, prejudices and even contempt. Our society has become so used to the disposable diapers that nothing else seems more imaginable.
