10 Tips for a child’s birthday with a few dos – don – ts

Children’s birthday! Yeah! The child is one year older and looks forward to an exuberant party, the parents look forward to the evening after. Haha. Here are my tips for bright children’s eyes in a party mood.

My children have been counting since New Year’s Eve how long it will be until their birthday. Yes, the days, not the months. Celebrating a birthday is just fun. A birthday party is also a major milestone for children. After all, they urgently want to get a year older. Great gifts, the focus is on delicious cakes and soda galore – what could be better on such a day?

  10. Learnings and Do’s & Don’ts from my children’s birthday career

And now it goes to the details!

1. The invitation card

Regardless of whether you made it yourself or bought it yourself, an invitation card for the children’s birthday makes it particularly festive. An invitation card for their children’s birthday is very important to my children. Every afternoon in the game, parents can make appointments via text message, but there is a card for the children’s birthday, which marks the whole special event that the children are looking forward to.

2. The birthday cake

A rainbow cake with a very simple recipe? Is there. Here I link my recipe "Rainbow Cake for Lazy", which is really super simple and tastes good too. My white icing on top is white chocolate and not fondant, which is easier and tastes better for the children, in my experience.

It doesn’t always have to be a motif cake with three tiers, really not. So never, actually. Nevertheless, I have to admit that my children always dress up, creative Wish cake. For all ambitious cake bakers I will link this book here.

For all those with a delicious birthday cake want to manufacture, I recommend either lovingly lumpy designed pirate boats or simply a sheet cake with a horse’s head, heart or number of Smarties scattered on it! That is almost no effort. My kids can taste love from this weird cake, always.

But soon I plan to decorate a simple gugelhupf with carelessly distributed icing and beautiful cake toppers:

3. The party decoration

No party without decoration. Whether balloons, streamers or party glitter, something special is great! Whether pirate decoration, unicorn, raven sock or other topics, a decoration creates its own little party world.

4. Celebrate a theme party

After I refused to celebrate a theme party on children’s birthday for years, I tried it out and it became a wonderful children’s party. Once the theme of "horse party" was just a loose bracket that was reflected in the invitation card, cake decorations, paper plates and handicrafts.

The other time it was a somewhat more elaborate pirate party, for which I can really recommend this party box.

We tried this party box for a pirate party and I really recommend it. Back then I blogged something about it. There is not only everything to play with, but also invitation cards, party decorations, table decorations and a little disguise for every child. The price, which initially appears to be high, is relativized again. From the book and the many game ideas you will still have something on the upcoming birthdays.

What I’ve learned from this party box is the following

A theme party creates a special mood through the thematic bracket. The children immediately play the role of pirate, horse, rider or princess when it is prepared in a playful way. A little story helps Beginning, new pirate or horse names and matching games. So there is a nice cohesion in the group of small guests, there is less argument and the children all like to play along. Give it a try.

4. Choose the right children’s birthday games

Haha, yes exactly. Snap! But it’s actually quite simple. Games at the birthday party are a must for children of all ages! The difficult thing is just spoiled for choice: Which games could be the most fun for the little ones? Of course, there are the classics that everyone still knows from their own childhood, such as "pot beating", "trip to Jerusalem" and "chocolate competition". A scavenger hunt at the end of the party (schedule well) is always well received by us. Before that, we mostly play pot beating and potato walking.

Game inspirations can also be found in countless books, and I really liked this one:

5. Pinata or scavenger hunt

Do not ask me why, one of the two is essential for a child’s birthday. So far I’ve only ever done a scavenger hunt myself. But the kids rave about the pinatas they saw on other children’s birthdays. What is important is the fun factor during the scavenger hunt (not too difficult, not too boring) and the funny Auspower destruction rage at the Pinata smash.

5. Install a quiet handicraft or painting round

I usually do it after the scavenger hunt and all the other games and before dinner. No matter whether t-shirts or small cloth bags or cups are painted, masks are designed or small wooden horses are painted to match the theme party, it is always fun for the children and makes them come down so pleasantly again.

6. Let the children let off steam and let them play themselves

An important item on the children’s party schedule is: No program. Just leave the children to their own devices. In everyday life there are not enough opportunities for children to let off steam, unworthy and especially without a program. The children’s birthday party is ideal for this, whether on the adventure playground, in the swimming pool, in the courtyard behind the house or in the park.

7. A party planner

Regardless of whether it is toddler age, early school age and pre-teens, at some point an age has been reached at which you have no idea how the children’s birthday party should be designed. You can also use a party planner such as Kiko Konderkonzepte to help you. They do not always have to throw the whole party, but can also give organizational questions or for game design, decoration or other ideas. Helped me for the horse birthday of the daughter Simone von Kiko with an enchanting concept for game, theme design and procedure. It worked very well via email and on the phone. After this Party disaster, which took place two months earlier, gave me a lot of security and great ideas that I wouldn’t have thought of myself.

And a few more learnings and do’s & Don’ts from my children’s birthday career:

Dear parents, exactly, by the way, I am the blogger who blogged about the children’s party disaster at some point! Yup. You get wise from harm. I have had three more successful children’s birthdays since then. You can find my learning in the tips below. I really know what I’m talking about.

  • The worst of all on the disaster child’s birthday was that we took a present from the birthday child, which the child naturally had a special right to. The other children also wanted to play with it. Since this was only possible one at a time (read in the text, link above), there are arguments about how often and in what order. Ultimately, every child got frustrated.
  • Not only cakes, but also a little raw food, a little fruit and maybe even small rolls or pretzel sticks are great for the catering. Some children are simply hungry again after the cake and cannot wait until dinner.
  • When playing children’s games, make sure that most of the children are busy and do not have to wait too many on the sidelines. Otherwise boredom breaks out quickly.
  • Choose games that require different talents, such as movement games, brain teasers, skill games, creative games such as painting or handicrafts. So every child has a chance to do something particularly well.
  • Avoid competitive games, depending on how ambitious the children are or how different the children’s performance is.

And now I wish you all a relaxed, exciting, great and never-to-be-forgotten children’s birthday party!
