The mountains are within reach. Crystal-clear lakes sparkle in the sunlight. In between there are pretty villages and picturesque small towns. But above all castles. Fairytale castles, which were built by a fairytale king and have lost nothing of their charm until today. On the contrary. The Allgäu with its clean air, its wonderful landscape and its castles of the Bavarian King Ludwig II is a magnet for tourists from all over the world. Wouldn’t it be a good time for a German to get to know this wonderful region in his own country? The hosts in the Allgäu would certainly be delighted. But be careful: Who has been there once, always wants to go there again. This region has addictive potential!

In the footsteps of a fairytale king

The predicate “fairy tale king” clings to Bavaria’s Ludwig II as stubbornly as the role of the “Sissi” did for Romy Schneider. Whatever this predicate had to do with reality, remains to be seen. What is certain is that the legends and stories surrounding the monarch and above all his castles have lost nothing of their fascination to this day. What the Bavarians once had to spend huge sums on construction costs for, today it brings them flourishing income. Because the Allgäu is not only worth a visit because of its scenic attractions, but also because of its many royal sights. The Neuschwanstein Castle and the Hohenschwangau Castle are outstanding. Both are international five-star sights with their own unique character. If you are an individual tourist and enjoy a quiet time, you will be on your way as early as possible to visit Neuschwanstein. In the course of the morning, whole busloads arrive with visitors, then things can get a little more turbulent in the castle. Strictly speaking, not all of the stations where Ludwig’s life and his desire to build can be traced are located in the Allgäu. But the Allgäu is an ideal starting point to visit these testimonies. Herrenchiemsee Castle and Linderhof Castle are within easy reach. And also the Starnberger See, in which the “Kini” found a sad, until today not completely clarified end, is not far away.

The Allgäu is a holiday region for all seasons

The Allgäu is a holiday region that can be visited all year round and always reveals new charms. Those who come in summer have wonderful opportunities for hiking and cycling tours. Hikes in the Nagelfluhkette Nature Park, for example, are more than just a walk. This cross-border nature park near Oberstaufen connects the southern Allgäu with the Vorderen Bregenzerwald in Austria. If you like, you can overcome differences in altitude of up to 1400 metres here. This not only trains your fitness, but also guarantees a varied landscape and great views. Summer holidays, summer holidays – this is a time that is always good for bathing fun. The Allgäu offers bathing lakes and bathing parks. In the Alpsee-Grünten holiday region there is even a combination of the two. So let’s go to Immenstadt, where the largest natural lake in the Allgäu, the Großer Alpsee, awaits visitors. The lake is embedded in a picturesque landscape and the water, according to the tourist office, has drinking water quality. Not far from here, also in Immenstadt, the Kleine Alpsee is a destination for all those who travel with children and young people. In addition to the natural swimming pool, there is also an outdoor pool, a football and volleyball court and an adventure playground.

The Allgäuer Seenland is also a real insider tip for the winter. If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of skiing and might not feel completely safe anyway, then this is the right place for you. The landscape around Buchenberg and Waltenhofen lies in the heart of the Allgäu in a gently undulating landscape. There it is fun to be a winter holiday novice in the snow. Snowshoe hikes, cross-country skiing, tobogganing or simply building a snowman with the children – that’s how winter goes in the Allgäu! To avoid a false impression, however, it should be noted that the Allgäu also has some very popular ski resorts where things are faster. One of the most famous of these is located near Oberstdorf and offers almost 130 (!) kilometres of pistes, which are also used for international competitions.

Just let us spoil you

It doesn’t always have to be exhausting to take care of your health a little bit. In the Allgäu it is sometimes enough just to take a deep breath. This applies, for example, to Bad Wörishofen, which has a recognised healing climate. But this also applies – again just one example – to the climatic health resort of Pfronten. The wellness offers there include treatments with mountain meadow hay and Kneipp treatments. In the healing and health resorts of the Allgäu, even a serious health check can be combined well with a holiday. In addition, there is of course also a comprehensive range of beauty treatments.

And where am I supposed to live?

You really don’t need to worry your head about this question in the Allgäu. In cities like Füssen and Kempten there are excellent hotels as well as in tourist centres like Schwangau, Oberstdorf and Oberstaufen. Alpine tradition and host qualities are of course also cultivated in almost all smaller guesthouses and inns with overnight accommodation. Among the most popular accommodations in the Allgäu are the holiday apartments, which are available in every size and equipment. From the romantic cuddly apartment for fresh lovers to the modern multi-bedroom apartment for the whole family, everything is available. Depending on the host, a dog bed can often be added for four-legged fellow travellers. Apropos. If you don’t just like travelling with your pet, but with your whole household, you will be spoilt for choice. Camping sites are a big topic in the Allgäu and wait at the most beautiful places to be used eagerly.

And when do you book?

Wonderful mountain panorama, clear lakes and clear air, world famous sights, best food, a high recreational value and lots of possibilities for interesting day trips. Is there any argument for NOT spending a holiday in the Allgäu? Even those who like to spend their free weeks abroad should consider the Allgäu. Austria is very close. And via the Brenner motorway even Italy with its Dolomites, Bolzano and Merano is within reach.
