Excursions and sights in SalzburgThe provincial capital Salzburg is of course worth a visit in any weather. In the medieval alleys the spirit of Mozart blows and the magnificent buildings are worthwhile for an entertaining city tour in Salzburg. You can also walk up to the fortress (or take the elevator) and enjoy the view over Salzburg’s old town.
One day is not enough for the city of Salzburg. Besides the city tour you can also see many things with children in the surrounding area. The zoo in Salzburg is beautiful, our little one liked the pigs best. They made a trip there with grandma and grandpa. My tip for your Salzburg trip with childrenOn the way from Munich to Salzburg, you’ll pass by the Porsche Toy Museum with its miniature iron world in front of the city. Salzburg with children: Hallein Salt Mine
Salt mine Hallein with childrenA visit to the Salt Worlds in Hallein is highly recommended. It is only a few kilometres away from the old town of Salzburg. The salt mine is in the mountain, you drive with a small train into the salt tunnels. That alone is a dream destination for children! And then inside in the salt mine it goes down on two long slides and with a raft over a salt lake. Unique, a particularly great excursion value. The prices for the mine in Salzburg are not quite cheap, but worth the special excursion. Here all current information directly on the Salzbergwerk website.

Salzburg with children: Reservoirs Kaprun
Top excursion destination in the SalzburgerLand with children. These are the Kaprun reservoirs! You can get into this scenery without any effort: By bus and the unique inclined lift, visitors come from the narrow valley near Kaprun up into the high mountains. If you like, you can go for a short hike or simply stroll along the dam wall. The world of electricity is interesting for children: experiments can be carried out there. Salzburg with children: Adventure playground Zell am See
Another top excursion destination in the Salzburger Land with childrenOur children were very enthusiastic about Schmidolin’s baptism of fire. It is a theme trail on the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See. The Schmittenbahn takes you up to the top, where the easy and varied family hike begins. On an easy circular path you will find many unique play stations that are nowhere else to be found! All are individual, not the same play equipment on another mountain.
Great even in hot weather, because the playgrounds and stations are partly located in the shady forest. If you like, you can also ride electric motorcycles up there on a course.
Rewarding destinations in the Salzburger Land with children
Castles and a huge ice world south of Salzburg with childrenRound 55 kilometres south of Salzburg there are two sights with a large audience: The first is Hohenwerfen Castle, which can already be seen from the motorway. Very impressive and powerful, it stands on the hill, seemingly impregnable. Nowadays you can walk comfortably up the hill, have a look at the rooms and also follow the flight show with the eagle. On the other side of the mountain, one of the top attractions for children in Salzburg is not visible from the outside. It is probably also unique in Austria: the Eisriesenwelt. It can only be visited in the summer months and is constantly changing. A wonder world in ice. On the border to Carinthia, Mauterndorf Castle is worth a visit with children. Especially the guided tour through the tower is recommendable and the own children’s tour.
Family trip in Salzburg to waterfalls and gorges
The Krimml Waterfalls with Children in SalzburgSalzburg is rich in mountains and water. This can be seen in various forms. The Krimml Waterfalls are particularly impressive. They are the largest waterfalls in Europe. A family-friendly hiking trail leads to the various waterfalls. Absolutely make with children!
The most visited gorge in Salzburg is the Liechtenstein gorge near St. Johann im Pongau. You hike about one kilometre over paths and bridges, through a narrow gorge below the water rushes loudly with full power. A great natural spectacle. Very beautiful and family-friendly are also the Kitzlochklamm in Taxenbach and the Sigmund Thun Klamm in Kaprun. Who is in Kaprun can also make an excursion to the reservoirs, which serve for the electricity production.

Salzburg Canyoning with childrenWe have also been to the Canyoning in Salzburg. Through an unsecured gorge we swam in neoprene suits protected by the crystal clear water, jumped in gumpen and experienced nature from the wild side. What an experience! It goes here in the Almbachklamm with children from 6 years.

Playgrounds SalzburgThe devil’s water in Saalbach Hinterglemm is worth mentioning in terms of water playgrounds. And on the theme trails, the “Schmidolin Weg” on the Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See is very great with children. We found a huge playground in Großarl.
