Ford puma ST driving review

Nuremberg – whether you need a crossover also in sporty – one may discuss about it. However, it is indisputable that vehicles of this type meet with an interested clientele. Ford serves the corresponding clientele with the 200 hp puma ST and leaves it at three cylinders, in certain driving situations, one of them even takes a break. Driving report:

What it looks like: looks are a matter of taste, and the ford puma is no exception. Some people work off the design to the extent that they think it’s daringly playful, while others – and our eyes agree – think the 4.23-meter compact crossover is both athletic and elegant, and visually a hit.

Technically, the puma is based on ford’s B-segment platform, if you will, marking the SUV from the small car fiesta. As you know, there is also a sporty ST model, the puma joins it and is advertised by the manufacturer as a "high-performance crossover SUV" and "performance vehicle". The puma ST should also look like a sports car, which is why it has a more impressive roof spoiler than the standard model, a diffuser at the rear, 19-inch alloy wheels and high-gloss black on the roof, radiator grille, exterior mirror housings and the aforementioned roof spoiler. When the doors are opened, the ST logo is projected onto the asphalt. And one of the special colors is the daring furious green metallic, for which ford charges an extra 1000 euros.

How it is set up: the ST identity should not be overlooked in the interior either, the two letters can be found on the floor mats as well as on the recaro sport seats covered with a non-slip material called "miko dinamica" or on the gear knob. Furthermore, there is gray decorative stitching, the steering wheel is flattened at the bottom and surprised us with its size. In contrast, the 8-inch touchscreen for multimedia looks rather small in view of today’s wide-screen landscapes. As far as the 12.3-inch driver’s display is concerned, however, the puma ST meets the digital requirements; plus points are also scored by all kinds of analog access options, being able to control volume, temperature or ventilation via rotary knobs is simply practical.

Regarding the material mix and the quality of workmanship, it has to be said that both are okay, but not necessarily up to premium standard.

How much space he has: the tightly padded recaro sport seats have already been mentioned, the author of these lines found herself well accommodated on them and equipped with reliable side support, from taller drivers, however, quiet grumbling was heard about the tight cut of the seats.

In the rear compartment, legroom is no cause for complaint within the limits of the small car platform, but the air over the top is a little thin due to the sloping roof line. A lot of storage space is available behind the tailgate, 456 to 1216 liters can be used to the full. Like all puma variants, the ST also features the clever 81-liter mega-box under the load floor (height-adjustable with one hand). It is completely lined with plastic and equipped with a drain valve. If dirty cargo has to be accommodated, its traces can be removed with a water hose, the mud simply drains downward.

What drives it: analogous to the fiesta ST, a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that reaches the full power of its 147 kw/200 hp at 6000 rpm and produces a respectable 320 newton meters of torque, which is available between 2500 and 3500 rpm. The gears are changed manually via an excellent six-speed transmission, and a gearshift indicator guides the driver through the process.

Three-cylinder, we hear the sport pilot ask worriedly, can that be something? It can, but we will come back to that. Let’s start by pointing out that not even these three pistons are permanently on duty, because in order to save fuel, one is switched off under partial load, so that the puma ST is then running as a two-cylinder engine.

Back to what this little machine makes possible in terms of driving pleasure: plenty of! The turbocharged ecoboost engine is a great source of propulsion, impressively powerful, the ST pushes forward with verve even at low revs, and it still revs briskly at the top end. And it sounds appropriately throaty anyway, very throaty, to be precise, thus allaying any concerns about an unworthy three-cylinder tonality.

How it drives: ford knows how to drive man, and on the puma ST this competence is to be appreciated to a special degree. Even if, like all performance SUVs, it doesn’t have the ultimate sporty spirit of a flat-six dynamic car, it loves curves, feels wonderfully nimble and agile as it wobbles from one turn to the next, and is extremely easy to handle. The fact that the steering commands, as ford assures, are implemented almost 25 percent more directly than in the basic puma and that the rear composite handlebar provides 50 percent more firmness, is noticeable. Larger stabilizers counteract the rolling tendency in curves, and as part of the performance package (1200 euros) there is a mechanical front-axle limited-slip differential in addition to torque vectoring for the good of traction.

Also included is launch control, for when the front-wheel drive car needs to get off to the best possible start on the circuit. The appropriate driving program is called "racetrack"; it deactivates the traction control and puts the ESP into lean mode; it can also be deactivated completely. The "eco" version is designed for the best possible fuel efficiency, with "normal," "comfort" and "sport" – which can be selected via a button on the steering wheel – all located between the two worlds.

The brakes are quite aggressive, you have to get used to that. And the tightly tuned suspension means that bumps are not really passed on to the back mildly.

The ST sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.7 seconds and tops out at 220 km/h.

One annoyance familiar from the standard Puma is the right-hand exterior mirror, which cannot be adjusted to fit every driver’s field of vision.

What it consumes: the example of the 1358-kilogram puma ST shows that sporty talent can also go hand in hand with moderate drinking habits. 8.7 l/100 km was the maximum resulting from a spirited demand for power, the ST completed the economy lap with 5.1 liters, the average was 6.4 liters.

What it offers: standard features include 19-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, ambient lighting, recaro sport seats, multimedia system including navi, bang&olufsen sound system, lane departure warning, high beam assist and traffic sign recognition.

What it costs: from 30.900 euro.

What we mean: the ST is certainly not the most sensible of ford’s puma pack. this role is more likely to be filled by candidates like the puma 1.0 ecoboost hybrid from. But there are undoubtedly customers who are enthusiastic about such a sporty crossover. you will be satisfied with a lot of driving fun supplied – without having to pay too much for it at the gas station.
