The 2011 Pritzker Prize winner Eduardo Souto de Moura is one of the most important representatives of the Portuguese school of architecture. His latest project, the house in Ponte de Lima 3, in the north of Portugal, contains many features of his style and at the same time expresses a feeling of sustainability based on the history and respect of the location.

The house at Ponte de Lima 3 is a recent work by the Portuguese master of architecture Eduardo Souto de Moura. It cannot be summarized in the apparent simplicity of its form, but is a work that you have to get to know and understand in the compositional details inserted by the planner. Souto de Moura, winner of the prestigious Pritzker Prize 2011 or Wolf Prize 2013, to name just a few of the latest awards, realizes “silent” architectures – works of absence, such as the empty spaces that are cut by the clear shadows, that have characterized his style so intensely. This work reveals the tension in relation to a reduction to the minimal shape of the cuboid on two floors, the ground floor where the street level entrance is and the basement. The volume of the house in Ponte de Lima rests on that move of the location in the west and appears silent and compact, while it opens with the moderation permitted by the climate in the south. In the south, the balconies and windows that correspond to the living rooms on the ground floor are literally carved into the facade, while in the basement a large swimming pool looks onto the surrounding green area thanks to a floor-to-ceiling glass wall.

The northern front offers the only access to the House, which can be reached from the gate on the street via a path covered with granite. If you look at the front from this side, the house appears to be divided into two by the sloping line of the hill: on the way up it disappears into the ground, while on the way down it shows itself and opens up to the dialogue with the park to which it leads

As with the previous works by Souto de Moura, the house made of white plastered concrete stands out against the nature into which it fits and protects people. The strong sunlight of Portugal is let into the living space in moderation: the bedrooms, the kitchen and the living room are closed on three sides, whereas the fourth, completely glazed, opens to the south. Nevertheless, the direct light does not come in, but is softened by the balconies. From this same protective ground comes the invention of the floating fencing on the Eastern Front, which stems from the history of the place, i.e. the area on which the new holiday home now stands and which – as you can read in the planner’s comments – was once a farmhouse.

What was once a fence outside the walls of the house is now projected upwards and held in suspension: when the sun rises, it shines on the garden and the single tree that grows in the granite floor. When the sun is high in the sky, the “fence” protects and casts its clear shadow on the ground. It protects like a canopy, but does not cover and so lets the tree grow, which can become taller than the house.

In line with this floating atmosphere is the external staircase without parapet, which extends the terrace into the garden and thus refers to the connection between inside and outside, between architecture and nature. The green roof gives the landscape back what the built volume has deprived it of.
