Tooth sealing: When does it make sense??

Tooth enamel can develop small hairline cracks even with healthy teeth. These small cracks can be so narrow that they cannot be cleaned with the toothbrush, they are ideal places for tooth-damaging caries bacteria. These cracks on the molars occur particularly frequently, since these are particularly stressed by the strong forces when chewing the food.

To prevent the occlusal surfaces from being permanently damaged by caries, the dentist can protect the surfaces with a tooth seal. This caries prophylaxis is covered by the health insurance for children and adolescents up to the age of 18, provided that the teeth are sealed on one or more of the large molars. For milk or small molars and adults, the costs must be borne by the patient privately. Tooth sealing costs between 15 and 25 euros per tooth.

Sealing teeth – what does it mean??

The occlusal surfaces of our molars resemble a mountain landscape: they have elevations and humps that are separated from one another by “valley furrows”. For some people this landscape is very rugged, for others it is less. Deeply furrowed furrows, which the dentist calls “fissures”, are particularly problematic: they are difficult to reach with the bristles of the toothbrush, which is why food residues and dental plaque often accumulate in them. This subsequently causes caries bacteria on the scene, which find ideal living conditions in these niches.

Protect teeth by sealing teeth

Despite very good dental care, bacteria can settle in depressions on the tooth surface and damage the tooth. For this reason, very large depressions and furrows (fissures) represent an increased risk of caries. To prevent these depressions, the dentist can specifically close them using a special procedure, the so-called "fissure sealant". Read all important information about tooth sealing here and find out how you can protect yourself privately against possible costs.

Useful especially for children and teenagers

Strong fissures occur primarily on large occlusal surfaces. A tooth seal is therefore particularly suitable as an additional protective measure for the permanent molars or molars, especially for children whose teeth often have larger fissures and require special protection. The first molars break through in children around the age of 6. The second molars follow at the age of 12. At the appropriate age, it makes sense to carry out a tooth seal for the molars and additionally strengthen the teeth with fluoride. Adequate sealing can reduce the risk of caries at an early age. However, sealing is also possible regardless of age if there are significant fissures that represent an increased risk of caries.
