Thailand with children – what to do with children in Bangkok?

Last updated: November 2nd, 2018

Those who travel to Thailand on holiday with children must inevitably prepare differently than holidaymakers without children. That is clear. There are usually more than enough job opportunities on the Thai islands for children of all ages. In Bangkok, however, this is not so easy and there are a few things to consider. In this article I will introduce you to 5 great things to do for children in Bangkok, and I will tell you which families a stay in Bangkok is not suitable for.

Thailand with a child – this should be noted in Bangkok

Thailand differs significantly from Europe in two ways: the infrastructure and the climate. These two factors should be considered when considering a Thailand vacation with children.

Infrastructure in Thailand

Thailand is relatively modern for a Southeast Asian country, but according to some sources it is still considered a "third world country". I think this term is exaggerated, but it is still the case that the infrastructure leaves something to be desired in some areas.

For example, if you are traveling with very young children who are still dependent on buggy and the like, you should only stay in Bangkok for a short time, since the streets and sidewalks are not buggy-friendly at all, and getting around the city quickly becomes a nightmare can. In addition, special attention should be paid to the traffic in Bangkok. Over 8 million people live in Bangkok, the traffic cannot be compared to any other major European city. It is loud, hectic, hot – just not ideal for very young children.

For kids who are a bit older and can stay on their feet all day, Bangkok is definitely a great city to explore for a few days (more on that below). Nevertheless, when choosing your hotel, you should definitely pay close attention to the location. Too long footpaths can be very exhausting and exhausting with children. A location away from modern Bangkok (e.g. in the old town or on the riverside) can in turn be very boring for the children, because in the old town – around the temples – there is only a very limited range of leisure activities for children. The Siam district is an ideal location for families with children.

Climate in Thailand

The temperatures and especially the humidity are significantly higher in Thailand than in Europe. In addition, the air quality in Bangkok is very poor. You should definitely take this into account and give the children enough breaks, provide them with adequate sun protection and, above all, give them enough drinking water. On hot days it is often very tiring for adults. Even more so for children. Basically, the weather is no reason not to go on holiday in Thailand with children.

5 things to do with kids in Bangkok

Large cities can quickly become boring for children. The imposing temples in Bangkok are interesting for adults, but often not really interesting for the children. If you already have older children who want to let off steam and explore new things, you can take a closer look at these 5 companies for children in Bangkok.

1. Ice skating in the Central World shopping center

Yes, ice skating is also possible in tropical Thailand, even in summer. The Central World Mall has its own ice skating rink for kids, which is very popular and open all year round. Perfect for parents who want to use the shopping paradise for themselves. Around the Christmas season there are also many beautiful, impressive decorations in and outside of Central World, which can also be interesting for children.

2. Trampoline jumping in the bounce

Recently Bangkok has a really cool trampoline offer, which is a very cool activity in Bangkok especially for somewhat older children (10 years and over) and also for parents. There are two bounce halls in Bangkok. One in the EmQuartier mall (one BTS station from Asoke) and one in The Street shopping complex in Ratchada (3 MRT stations north of Asoke). There are numerous huge trampolines, but also various obstacle courses. Bounce also has a children’s gym for children between the ages of 3 and 6.

Here are two cool videos that nicely show what you can do in the bounce:

More information on the offer and prices can be found on the BounceInc website.

3. Siam Ocean World – perfect for children in Bangkok

Siam Ocean World is located in the basement of the Siam Paragon shopping center and is currently the largest aquarium in Southeast Asia. Admission is not cheap (approx. 1,000 baht for adults and 800 baht for children up to 11 years old), but there is a lot on offer and the aquarium is suitable for children of all ages. Parents will also get their money’s worth on the almost 10,000 square meters. If you book online, you get up to 35% discount. There are also combo tickets, which also grant entry to Madame Tussaud’s in Bangkok and the 4D Aquarium Kino.

More information about Siam Ocean World is available on the website.

4. Lumphini Park & Benjakitti Park

These two parks are perfect for children because they offer very large green areas and several children’s playgrounds. There are also artificial lakes that can be explored by pedal boat. Visiting a park is a must in Bangkok anyway. Anyone traveling to Bangkok with children should definitely stop by one of the two parks. It doesn’t really matter whether you choose Lumphini Park or Benjakitti Park and you should make it dependent on the location of your hotel.

5. Arcade video games in the MBK

The MBK is already a mandatory program for many visitors. If you have children with you, you should definitely try the video games on the top floor. Arcade games are still very popular in Asia and almost no longer exist in this form in Europe. There are also a lot of things to buy at the MBK that are interesting for children, such as the classic, "fake" soccer jerseys for very little money. Shopping in Bangkok with children is best possible in the MBK.

The best hotel for families with children in Bangkok

Finally, the question remains which hotel in Bangkok is best for families. Basically, all hotels that offer family suites are suitable. One accommodation, however, stands out, namely the Siam Kempinski Hotel.

The hotel is perfect for families in that it is directly connected to the Siam Paragon shopping center. As a result, two of the five above-mentioned activities for children are right on your doorstep and you save a lot of time and especially the often tedious transportation with children in Bangkok. The hotel also has its own kids club that you can entrust your children to while you go on a sightseeing or shopping tour (next door in Siam Paragon). In addition, the Siam Kempinski Hotel captivates with its great outdoor area, which quickly makes you forget that you are in hectic, polluted Bangkok.
