Used car checklist

you are interested in a used car? Before you buy, there are a few things you should look out for to ensure that you don’t miss any defects and that you enjoy the vehicle for a long time to come. With our checklist, you know what to look out for.

Looking in the engine compartment is part of the process before buying a used car!

Body check

Before you get into the car, get an impression of the outside. Don’t let yourself be rushed during your tour: some sellers try to divert attention from defects, perhaps even accident damage. Therefore, make an appointment in daylight, then you will see even small scratches. We also recommend that you take a friend with you, because four eyes see more than two.

  • Is the car clean? If not, you will not be able to see scratches and scuffs.
  • Look for major damage, such as dents on the bumper or in the door frame.
  • Be careful with rust. Crumbling rust is a bad sign – then it’s time to stay away from it! Inspect the entire body, underbody and exhaust.

Engine compartment

The engine is the heart of the car. So it pays to take a very close look. Get an overall impression and first check if the engine compartment is clean. If the engine has been washed, this may be an indication that the seller is trying to hide leaks.

  • Are the engine oil, brake fluid and coolant at the required level??
  • Are there traces of foam or oil in the radiator water??
  • Pay attention to the hoses: are they porous??

Can winter tires be used in summer?

Tires

Check the condition of the tires and remember to measure the tread depth. The minimum tread depth for summer tires is 1.6 mm, for winter tires 4 mm. As soon as the tread depth is less, new tires are needed. The cost should be included in the purchase price.
Look for damage to the tread or sidewall and make sure the tires are not worn down.

Vehicle lighting

  • Check all lights. Do the headlights, taillights and brake lights work??
  • Is the light flickering??
  • Are there any stone chips or is moisture visible behind the glass??

Interior

  • Doors and trunk lid: all doors should open and close smoothly. Does the key fit?
  • Are the sealing rubbers in order??
  • Indicator lights should not flash.
  • Test all buttons and levers: hazard warning lights, wipers, air vents, etc.
  • Are the upholstery clean and free of odors??
  • What condition are the seat belts in??
  • What is the mileage?
Do the speedometer reading and the condition of the car match?? You can find this out by taking the used car for an extensive test drive.

Take a test drive!

At first sight everything is fine? Then do a test drive.
Start the engine and listen to it to see if you notice any unusual noises. If it rattles or whistles, something is wrong. Ask!

Our tip: if you can’t hear exactly what sounds funny, you should consult an expert.

  • How is the steering of the car? Does the car drive straight even at higher speeds??
  • Is the clutch pedal sticking??
  • How does the gearshift work? Does it hang or make any noise?
  • How do the brakes work??
  • How do the shock absorbers behave on bumps and uneven roads??

Underbody check

After the test drive:

  • Check for oil dripping from the engine.
  • If the exhaust system shows any defects?
  • What is the condition of the brake pads??

Electrical appliances and other features

Radio: the sound system should not be tested while driving, in order to be able to perceive possible disturbing noises of the car.

Navigation system: also test whether the navigation system works. You can combine this with the test drive.

Better warranty when buying a used car

From 2022, you will benefit from greater safety when buying a used car. The law on material defects has changed in favor of the buyer. If you discover a defect after purchase, the reversal of the burden of proof now applies for a whole year. Previously it was six months. If the dealer does not want to pay for the damage, he must prove that it was not yet there at the time of handover. This is of course extremely difficult, so that you usually do not have to worry about being stuck with the costs.

If you want to be on the safe side when buying, it is best to go to the car dealer you trust. Many offer you a voluntary used car warranty. Basically, every dealer is obligated to a two-year warranty for material defects. However, this period can be shortened to one year by mutual agreement. During this time, the seller must pay for any defects in your vehicle. New: the limitation period must now be stated in the purchase contract.

If you buy privately, we recommend that you make a detour to the TuV, DEKRA or ADAC during the test drive. A check gives you additional certainty that the used car is actually in the condition described.

What do I have to pay attention to in the purchase contract?

Regardless of whether you buy from a private individual or a dealer: for your own protection, you should always conclude the purchase contract in writing. Serious commercial sellers will provide you with a contract to sign. But even if you buy a car privately, you should make sure to sign a written sales contract.

Make sure that the contract is correct and complete. You need to consider the following:
