Risks of fertility treatment

What can happen – I want to be informed!

No successful treatment is without risks – it is the same with fertility treatment. The risks mainly result from hormone stimulation and its consequences.

Hormone stimulation is usually necessary for successful fertility treatment. This leads to follicle growth and, in rare cases, can lead to overstimulation. Over-stimulation goes hand in hand with enlarged ovaries, fluid in the abdomen and more or less pronounced pelvic complaints. In rare cases, shortness of breath or thrombosis can also occur. Overstimulation is very rare in conventional sterility therapy (pure hormone stimulation or semen transmission). It occurs most frequently when stimulated for in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). If you experience overstimulation, a gynecologist should always be consulted.

Another risk of treatment is the development of a multiple pregnancy. A higher-level multiple pregnancy (triplets or higher) is very rare and occurs after conventional fertility treatment

Causes in women

An unfulfilled desire to have children – it’s up to me?

The causes of one unfulfilled desire to have children are only 30% with the woman alone. 50% of the man is the sole cause, another 20% has a common cause.

The Fertility Center Berlin supports you in clarifying the causes in your personal case. We talk discreetly about all questions, carry out an exact one diagnosis through and develop one if necessary treatment plan for you – in close cooperation with specialists or the doctor you trust.

The reasons for the woman’s unfulfilled desire to have children can be:

  • Fallopian tube occlusion (tubular sterility)
  • Carrying of endometrium into the free abdominal cavity (endometriosis)
  • Hormone disorders with too much male hormones and lack of ovulation (PCO syndrome)
  • premature aging of the ovaries
  • Not working the pituitary gland with no ovarian stimulation
  • and many other causes.

After our Experience A large part of the causes lies in the premature exhaustion of the ovaries, which in individual cases can occur in early years. For many women over the age of 38, however, this exhaustion of the ovarian reserve is increasing. This can be measured using the anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), which can give us direct information about the extent to which the ovaries are still functional and how good the chances of fertility treatment are.

What is the anti-müller hormone (AMH)?

The anti-Müllerian hormone is released by the ovary or testicle. It directly measures the number of small ovules (follicles) in the ovary and thus directly the ovarian reserve. In menopausal women, the anti-Müllerian hormone is below the detection limit. The value is increased in women with excessive ovarian production (such as polycystic ovary syndrome / PCO syndrome). The AMH is the earliest marker with which an early depletion of the ovarian reserve can be recognized.

Causes in men

What man should know

More than 50% of the causes of an unfulfilled desire to have children lie with the man – that is undisputed. In any case, it is good to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Fertility Center Berlin: we will talk to you about the possible causes, carry out an exact diagnosis and then carry out a research into the causes – and develop your treatment plan in collaboration with specialists.

Infertility in men

The most common cause of male infertility is decreased sperm quality. There can be many reasons for this, including the following:

  • hormonal imbalances
  • Varicose veins in the testicles
  • Testicular abnormality
  • Mumps disease in childhood
  • diabetes
  • Operated tumors
  • Genetic causes
  • stress
  • infections
  • Drug and alcohol abuse

Limited sperm quality

There are several forms of reduced sperm quality: oligozoospermia, asthenozoospermia, teratozoospermia, cryptozoospermia and azoospermia. These can occur individually or in combination with one another.

  • Oligozoospermia: The number of sperm in the ejaculate is too low (norm: > 20 million sperm / ml).
  • Asthenozoospermia: The motility of the sperm is reduced (norm: > 50% motile sperm).
  • Teratozoospermia: There are too few normally shaped sperm in the ejaculate (norm: >15% normal sperm).
  • Cryptozoospermia: There are only a few sperm in the ejaculate.
  • Azoospermia: The ejaculate contains no sperm at all.

If the examination of the ejaculate shows no abnormalities and all values are within the normal range, this is called normozoospermia. After an exact diagnosis in our center (spermiogram and blood sampling), the cause research and planning of the treatment is carried out in close cooperation with appropriate specialists (human geneticists and urologists), if this appears necessary.
