My husband and I take three weeks of vacation, six weeks have to be bridged. And six weeks of a holiday camp for two children, who can afford that? ”

Renate K. is not an isolated case with her worries. Where the family network is missing, it is very difficult to bridge the gap. However, she doesn’t have to worry about the costs. There is no immediate need for action in the capital: "Vienna offers parents good opportunities for reconciling work and family even during the holidays," emphasizes Christian Oxonitsch, City Councilor for Education. And a special offer was created for children from all-day public elementary schools: four campus locations are open during the holidays and holiday support is organized by private providers at a further ten school locations.

Basically, we have over 200 promotions this year, that is over 1,000 appointments for children aged 6 to 13 during the summer holidays. A very popular action is the night in the forest, an overnight stay with the foresters. The "Rein ins Rathaus" campaign in the last week of August is also great. Children can design their children’s city for a week: This is how the children choose their city councilors, mayors and govern and shape their children’s city. This year there is also the Vienna workshop for 10 to 13 year olds. Children here are journalists who write a newspaper, produce a film every day and talk to adult politicians! ”

By the way, Renate K.’s daughters are already registered for the holiday game. And yet she still formulates this haunting political wish: "Absolutely reduce the vacation from nine to six weeks, then everyone would finally be helped!"
