Only two weeks left before the first federal states (Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland) start their summer vacation. As every year, it is necessary to bridge nine weeks; not an easy task for working people. Renate K. (33) from Vienna describes the holiday care of her two daughters, 7 and 9 years old, as a real challenge: “We have no grandmothers and grandpas available. My husband and I take three weeks of vacation, six weeks have to be bridged. And six weeks of a holiday camp for two children, who can afford that? ”

Renate K. is not an isolated case with her worries. Where the family network is missing, it is very difficult to bridge the gap. However, she doesn’t have to worry about the costs. Because: There are enough financing options, knows Martina Specht from the Vienna children’s hub. "In individual cases there is the possibility to apply for AMS childcare allowance. In addition, childcare costs can be claimed in the employee assessment! "

Open hoarding
There is no immediate need for action in the capital: "Vienna offers parents good opportunities for reconciling work and family even during the holidays," emphasizes Christian Oxonitsch, City Councilor for Education. For all 20,000 kids who visit a daycare center during the school year, the daycare center remains open all day. And a special offer was created for children from all-day public elementary schools: four campus locations are open during the holidays and holiday support is organized by private providers at a further ten school locations.

Well, doing everyone right is an art that nobody can do. Because Renate K. holds against it: "The after-school groups during the holidays are thrown together completely new, my daughters don’t go there!"

Holiday game
In any case, your kids won’t get bored during the summer holidays. Because Vienna in particular offers a top program for the holiday season. The Wiener Ferienspiel, which has long been a classic, is extremely popular even in its 43rd year. Sabine Krones, head of the Wiener Ferienspiel, says: “The highlight is our big starting party in the Danube Park (July 4th and 5th). With the German hip-hop youth band your friends, but also Rolf Rüdiger, Bernhard Fibich and over 50 hands-on stations. It will be a huge family celebration. Basically, we have over 200 promotions this year, that is over 1,000 appointments for children aged 6 to 13 during the summer holidays. A very popular action is the night in the forest, an overnight stay with the foresters. The "Rein ins Rathaus" campaign in the last week of August is also great. Children can design their children’s city for a week: This is how the children choose their city councilors, mayors and govern and shape their children’s city. This year there is also the Vienna workshop for 10 to 13 year olds. Children here are journalists who write a newspaper, produce a film every day and talk to adult politicians! ”

By the way, Renate K.’s daughters are already registered for the holiday game. And yet she still formulates this haunting political wish: "Absolutely reduce the vacation from nine to six weeks, then everyone would finally be helped!"
