Media events determine today’s children’s culture and make specifications for role models and role behavior and specifically contribute to conveying values. The experience of the real world is influenced in early childhood by the anticipation of virtual experiences (example weather app) on the tablet or smartphone. From primary school age, messenger apps and the use of symbolic representations such as emojis shape children’s communication behavior. Our media education work confronts this reality of child life and develops strategies for a reflective, self-determined way of dealing, offers possibilities for a critical discussion and supports the development of one’s own attitude towards media realities by strengthening a self-confident personality.

In further training, educators learn how media affect children and how they can be guided to use media in a conscious manner. The aim is to impart media competence to the educators and to present the opportunities that practical media work with children offers. As part of the advanced training, concepts of media pedagogy are developed and media theoretical and practical practical knowledge imparted. The two-day training courses take place in children’s facilities.

Second building block: practical projects

The practical media work with the children should make them understandable, like the media "function". The children develop, for example, a radio play, a video film, create a cartoon using the Trickboxx, etc. The focus is on process-oriented work in which the educators are integrated. The practical projects usually last five days.

Third component: parents’ evening

The final one "building block" is the parents’ evening, which aims to clarify the possibilities of media education in the family. The project results of their children are presented to the parents. They serve as a starting point for information about children’s media behavior. In a discussion round, problems are discussed and concrete instructions for action for media use in the family Developed.

This is clearly a challenge for parents as a family educational context, but so are the professional educational institutions such as day-care centers and day-care centers, and this means the specific educators in the situation in which they deal with the topic of childhood, children’s media and media socialization to have to. First of all, this also requires an examination and reflection of one’s own behavior and usage habits of the "media" in private and professional life. On the other hand, it also requires a critical examination of media-related children’s living environments on a professional level and, consequently, the inclusion of children’s media experiences in day-to-day practice in daycare. Here the project "KiTa Medial" wants to show the possibilities of action-oriented media pedagogy in order to integrate the use of media as a component of child’s life and experience in the form of practice-oriented building blocks into day-care center practice.

Part of the training is always a practical part, which practices the use of a medium (audio, video, photo) that is deliberately chosen for the respective facility and thus minimizes the fear of technical media and at the same time enables creative possibilities and their implementation in everyday life.

2. Practice days with the children as examples of action-oriented media education

3. A parents’ evening, which on the one hand serves to educate about current social discourses and developments in media education, and at the same time wants to initiate an open and critical dialogue in order to encourage parents to be free of fear and constructively with the topic of children, media and education to deal with within the family.
