The boundaries between utility and marketing, between theory and practice, are often blurred. In our soccer shoe comparison 2019/2020, we clarify what is important when buying a shoe and for whom which shoe is best suited.

1. What is a soccer shoe?

A soccer shoe differs primarily from a normal sports shoe in terms of shape, material and bottom of the sole. Since the football fields used to be much different and were more like wild meadows or fields, a special shoe was needed that could offer the kickers a firm hold. A studded shoe was developed for this, which can be fitted with studs of different lengths depending on the nature of the surface. Even today, athletes use cleats on the lawn, e.g. are also used in rugby or American football shoes with studs. In athletics there are shoes with small nails, so-called spikes. In the past, the football shoes used iron studs, but now cams or studs made of plastic are also used.

Professionals, but especially older soccer players, usually pick up a leather studded shoe. Because you can also play with studded shoes on artificial turf, although cam shoes are more suitable. By the way, many players have two pairs of soccer shoes: a pair of cleats for soft, slippery fields and a pair of cam shoes for artificial turf and a hard surface. Special hybrid studded shoes use both cams and studs. The advantages and disadvantages of traditional cleats here again:

2. What types of soccer shoes are there??

Roughly speaking, a distinction is made between cleats, cams and multi-studded shoes. In order to find the best soccer shoe for your own taste, it depends on which surface you want to play on. The immediate conditions of the floor are crucial for choosing the right sole. It has long been more than just a distinction between indoor soccer shoes and cleats – whether artificial turf, ash pitches or other soccer fields: the right soccer shoe needs to be carefully selected for the surface, otherwise the risk of injury and the comfort when kicking suffers. The manufacturers use abbreviations in the product names to indicate the area of ​​application of the shoes. However, a leather shoe has to be taken care of regularly. The feet don’t sweat as quickly with leather uppers as with synthetic soccer shoes. Many players also appreciate leather because it is considered to be shock-absorbing when firing.

A studded shoe is suitable for soft surfaces such as lawns.

What the sole should be like depends on the surface on which you want to use the shoes. If the ground is soft, such as normal lawn, studded shoes should be put on. Depending on which stud length you prefer, you can screw on the corresponding studs. Cams are much shorter than studs and cannot be unscrewed because they are firmly integrated in the sole. As important as the material and sole are: if the shoe is not comfortable or there are bubbles, it is a bad buy. 5. Care and cleaning tips
