Running shoe test 2019: which is the best?

The best men’s running shoe

Arnold Zimprich

The best men’s running shoe for us is the New Balance Fresh Foam Zante Pursuit. It is characterized by its low weight, a good footbed and its rolling behavior. Its grippy sole is suitable for harder ground and is especially suitable for experienced runners. For more ambitious runners we have another recommendation, as well as for trail runners and beginners.

Update 8th August 2019

We have updated the availability of the products.

Running shoes are there – even if you try an old phrase – like sand on the sea. Expensive 200-euro shoes are on the Internet in addition to 30-euro models from the Far East.

You could easily test 20 different pairs of shoes, which are intended solely for use on hard tar. Or 20 pairs of shoes, which were designed only for weight-conscious trail runners.

In order to cover many runic specialties and to get a test impression for every running taste, we have selected and thoroughly tested 14 men’s running shoes from various disciplines for beginners and advanced players. Here are our recommendations:

Short overview: Our recommendations

New Balance Fresh Foam Zante Pursuit

The New Balance Fresh Foam Zante Pursuit does not immediately show its suitability for competition, but the low weight, excellent footbed and good roll-off make it a true racer. The minimalist designed shoe sits firmly on the foot, has a grippy, to the essentials reduced sole and makes the first lacing fun. It caters to more advanced runners who are looking for a lightweight knit shoe for use on harder ground and on the hunt for bests.

Saucony Kinvara 10

The Saucony Kinvara 10 proved to be a well-damped, feather-light, all-rounder that impresses ambitious runners with its comfortable fit. The running behavior is balanced, the lacing system smooth, the warm-up phase short. He convinces from the beginning as a good-natured, forgiving men’s running shoe for harder ground and is our first choice for performance-oriented training and competitions up to the half marathon.

inov-8 Terraultra G260

The inov-8 Terraultra G 260 raises the bar for cross country boots. The well-cushioned shoe provides through its graphene sole for an excellent grip on all surfaces – from gravel paths on rooty sections to snow. Despite its high price, it is therefore our tip for ambitious trail runners and all runners who want to be on the road with a shoe that represents the state of the art in running shoe construction.

Nike Tanjun

bought by 5 readers

For little money, the Nike Tanjun offers everything a runner’s heart desires: Good cushioning, good roll-off behavior, unproblematic handling. He is pleasantly light and comfortable. The all-EVA damping wedge absorbs the impact quickly, providing the foot with sufficient comfort and a balanced, good-natured running behavior. This makes it the ideal choice for casual runners or beginners who do not want to dig deep into their shoes.

Eyes open while running shoe purchase

The choice of the right running shoe is important not only for the health of the feet and the body. The running behavior itself is influenced by it. Estimate yourself realistically: Are you more of a beginner or an advanced? If you are unsure, it would be best to seek advice on site in the specialist shop. There are a few things to look out for.

damping

Professional street runners use shoes with virtually no cushioning. Your musculoskeletal system is trained accordingly to absorb the impact sufficiently. In addition, more cushioning also means more weight on the foot – which leads to significantly higher energy consumption in the countless up and down movements that the foot must perform in the course of a road run.

The damping absorbs the impact while running

Well-trained amateur runners choose shoes like the Asics Gel DS Trainer 24, which has more cushioning and better supports the foot.

Untrained runners or runners, however, should first buy a well-damped shoe such as the Mizuno Wave Rider 22, which absorbs the impact well, and only gradually reduce the damping in favor of a lower weight.

blasting

The term »blasting« refers to the height difference between the heel and forefoot, so to speak, the difference in level between the rear and front of a shoe.

A higher blast usually means better damping – but not always.

Depending on the level of training and running preferences, well-trained runners choose shoes with little to no blasting (less than 4 mm), moderate blasting (4-8 mm) or high blasting (from 8 mm). Should mean: profile runners and fans of barefoot shoes want the most direct feedback from the ground, runners initially value a little more cushioning.

But beware: There are shoes like the inov-8 Terraultra G 260, which despite good cushioning have no blasting. The cushioning layer is therefore the same height over the entire length of the shoe and there is no real absorbing wedge such as the Brooks Ricochet.

profile

The decisive question is: where am I actually going? Who runs primarily on tar, must worry about the profile little. If you are traveling more often on gravel roads and in wet conditions, you should definitely take a look at the profile: If the shoe has corresponding grooves, to have good grip on sand and gravel?

The profile of the shoe must match the ground condition

Trailrunners – runners who are off-road only and more likely to be “accidentally” on tar – need to take a close look at the profile. It has to be grippy, have good self-cleaning properties and provide good grip on rock and roots. In this test, however, only the Terraultra G260 falls into this category.

size

The running shoe is better a little too big than a little too small. It’s better to leave too much room for the toes than to kick on the first run and maltreat your toes. If one is not sure, one orients oneself at the size most convenient everyday shoe, which one has on the shelf.

That’s how we tested

All running shoes were tested on different lengths between 5 and 25 kilometers. Depending on the shoe, these trails ran on hard (asphalt, concrete), soft (dirt roads) or even scree underground (footpaths in the Alpine foothills and the Munich gravel plain).

We tested a total of 14 pairs of running shoes.

The shoes were evaluated only for the manufacturer’s recommended use. So no street shoe was “punished” if it did not perform well on loose ground. However, it was important to test the shoes as versatile as possible – after all, “city runners” will travel one or two kilometers on gravel roads.

Since the shoes were designed for very different uses, we chose four recommendations: one for training, one for competition, one for beginners and one for cross country skiers.

Our favorite: New Balance Fresh Foam Zante Pursuit

This name alone made us curious: What is New Balance’s “fresh foam” about? He looks slim, the upper made of fine knit fits perfectly when trying on the foot shape. In addition, we were curious to see what the transparent sole is able to afford. Not to be ignored are the 432 grams per pair – making the Zante Pursuit the clear weight winner in the test field.

New Balance Fresh Foam Zante Pursuit

New Balance is understated in the Fresh Foam Zante Pursuit. At this relatively harmless-looking shoe is not too much – and not too little. In short, one does not trust him at first the degree of wearing comfort, which he finally offers. But New Balance has decades of experience in running shoe construction – and you can tell that quickly with the Fresh Foam Zante Pursuit.

The upper material provides the foot with sufficient support, the fit is excellent, the footbed is convincing and offers the optimal balance of sufficient guidance and a good feel for the ground.

Excitedly, we take the Fresh Foam Zante Pursuit on a varied, briskly run half marathon route in the foothills of the Alps. There’s everything the runner’s heart desires: tar, gravel roads, even trail sections – the »Zante« is really fun! Compared to the other shoes in the test, it is not only incredibly light at just over 400 grams, but also provides sufficient support for the foot despite its minimalist construction.

The profile is quite amazing – it rolls on tar as well as on gravel roads and does not go limp on coarse gravel trails. Had we seen the Fresh Foam Zante Pursuit in the store, we would not have believed it to be that level of performance.

The New Balance Fresh Foam Zante Pursuit is the clear winner when it comes to a lightweight, yet high-performance men’s running shoe, which makes as much sense in training as in competition.

alternatives

Above all, our favorite is for more experienced runners. Others have different requirements. Here are our recommendations.

Saucony Kinvara 10

Saucony rushes the reputation as a cult brand kilometers ahead. One of the unique features of the US company is the eye-catching EVA damping wedge, which is used in several shoe series. EVA is the abbreviation for ethylene vinyl acetate, a good damping plastic.

With the Kinvara 10 (which means 10, the Kinvara is already in its tenth season), it drives Saucony to the extreme – the entire base of the shoe is made up of EVA, except for a small area equipped with treadsole. At first you start to wonder. This shoe should provide sufficient grip and guidance?

Anyone who already becomes skeptical will be fooled. Because the Kinvara 10 is a real comfort miracle. We have “hijacked” him without running in (caution, not recommended for beginners!) On a 24.5-kilometer run on tar, dirt roads and even a short trail and were impressed by the performance of the shoe. The Kinvara rolls off nicely, cushions pleasantly and does not feel too clumsy on the foot.

At the end, we had about 8 kilometers of tar, 4 kilometers of trail and 12 kilometers of hard dirt roads on the first 24.5 test kilometers behind us and were really impressed. The shoe is comfortable, has amazing grip despite the minimalist sole. The only downside: If it goes right into the terrain, you better choose a different shoe. On crisp, rocky climbs, the Kinvara 10 is out. But he was not constructed for that either.

And another thing: the snow-white EVA outsole does not look dewy on a gravel road after a day in the rain. So if you value optics, use the Kinvara 10 only in fine weather or only on tar. For us he is definitely a recommendation for anyone who really serious.

inov-8 Terraultra G260

The Terraultra G260 is a men’s running shoe designed specifically for ultra-deviance and equipped with an inov-8s graphene sole. Much has already been written about the sole. It should be more durable than comparable running shoe soles and offer perfect grip on all kinds of surfaces. What strikes you right at the beginning is the flexibility of the shoe. Its Metaflex sole provides excellent flex, the shoe can roll up despite its height.

We were very excited when we first ran the shoe for a competition. Although this was by no means ultra, the 5 kilometers of the Schaftlacher Waldlauf offer the perfect test terrain. First of all, it is striking that the shoes are built quite wide – who has narrow feet, may choose a narrower shoe. But the fit is very accommodating.

Next, we’ll take him on the already mentioned above 24.5 km route in the Alpine foothills. Here it is noticeable that the shoe has no detonation. The heel is therefore at the same height as the toes. Nevertheless, the shoe has a lot of cushioning – the “Ultra” in the name is program, the shoe should perform especially on long distances.

If you are used to a good “roll-out” like the Ricochet, you have to get used to the Terraultra. Should mean: Cracks who are used to walking barefoot and running shoes without blowing up will quickly make friends with the Terraultra 260. Beginners prefer to grab a shoe with a little more detonation – the Terraultra calls for a trained runner’s foot.

Nike Tanjun

bought by 5 readers

What an uncomplicated shoe! Slip on and feel good is the motto at one of the cheapest Nike running shoes on the market, the Tanjun. Its structure is very simple – a high flexible, airy upper shoe meets a base made entirely of EVA. No rubber elements on the sole, no frills, nothing – so the 60 Euro shoe for its price range is also quite light. Incidentally, “Tanjun” means simplicity in Japanese – like no other shoe in the test, the Americans rely on understatement for this model.

We were curious to see if such a simple knitted shoe would “fit”, if the shoe performed well on changing surfaces. After a few days, we take the shoe on a pretty 8 km route over tar and sandy gravel paths. First of all, the fit is surprising – thanks to its flexible knit on the top, it feels comfortable and almost like a sock. Also, the damping is completely fine, you roll off well, the shoe runs very comfortable, supports and is a blessing on shorter distances up to 10 kilometers.

What quickly becomes noticeable is the simply knitted footbed. The Tanjun offers the foot comparatively low grip. That may hardly be a factor in lighter runners in the truest sense of the word – but at 80 kilos of live weight the foot slips forward with every step – a bit uncomfortable on long runs. Soon there is a “bump”, where the big toe pushes to the top of the shoe.

However, using Tanjun exclusively on short-haul routes is not a blemish. All in all, you just realize that the Nike designers did a good job here as well. For the price, the Tanjun really offers a lot and is the perfect choice for runners or casual runners. It would be interesting to see how well the EVA sole is doing after 200 or more kilometers – as far as the abrasion is concerned, we are somewhat skeptical. Long-term experience, we submit.

Also tested

Puma Hybr >

Puma and running shoe? Why not! Wrong to see the brand with the big cat in hobby-runner circles comparatively rare. After all, the legendary 100-meter runner Usain Bolt was in Puma shoes for years. So we unpack the shoes with a little bulky name full of anticipation – and immediately we notice something: the insanely soft, almost jersey-like upper material. It clings to the foot and is slightly stretchy. Immediately the first question arises: Can this shoe stop? We first carry the Hybrid Runner Unrest a few days in everyday life, before we dare for the first time on the 10 km house round. 75 percent tar, 20 percent gravel roads, 5 percent meadow. The result is quite positive – this shoe knows to convince with its looseness.

Amazing that the Puma is not necessarily one of the lightweights in the test circuit. The sole construction is relatively heavy, but you hardly noticed on the way. Visually, the shoe creates the balancing act between “styler” and running shoe. The Hybrid Runner Unrest is thus a shoe that you can wear for a trip to the ice cream parlor in the city as well as for the spontaneous run in the park. For off-road torments, he is simply too tame, we would be too much too bad, because the fine knit upper material gives him a certain finesse. And one more thing: If you run a lot and long uphill and downhill, choose a shoe with a slightly firmer uppers. The Puma Hybrid Runner Unrest gives the foot plenty of freedom of movement, which leads to loss of power on long climbs. What is to convince the Puma, however, is the heel strap. The shoe is so much easier to put on. Due to its loose fit, it should be chosen very tight fitting.

Brooks Ricochet

There are these shoes, you slip in and feel good. Okay, I admit – I’ve always raved about Brooks. I have a Brooks foot, so to speak. Nevertheless, it is quite a surprise to me that Brooks has once again managed to set the standard of comfort and fit right at the top with this road running shoe. Compared to the soft knit on the Puma, the knitted Brooks upper also offers more resistance and thus better guidance of the foot. The profile is clearly laid out on the road, but also provides sufficient grip on dirt roads. The ricochet also convinces with its weight – the 612 grams with a size of EUR 44.5 feel pleasantly light.

What we particularly like about Ricochet is its Happy-Go-Lucky attitude. Slip on, lace up and off you go. The damping is moderate to abundant, the profile road-heavy – nevertheless, we have a lot of fun with the shoe on the first, about 11.2 km long, round with high gravel road share. Also the design knows how to please Ricochet – it looks more dynamic and not too bright. We would recommend the Brooks Ricochet to all runners who are looking for a training shoe for ambitious runs or a good-natured competition shoe for 10km, half marathons and marathons, scoring with excellent comfort and discreet performance.

Asics MetaR >

The Meta Ride is, to put it in New German, an “in-your-face” shoe. The eye-catching design with the red midsole makes you jump. Or, to put it in Asic’s words: “The MetaRide is a men’s performance running shoe designed for long distances on the road. The high-tech design allows you to run longer with less effort. Based on the three pillars of efficiency, cushioning and fit, this men’s running shoe has been designed by our specialists to run longer distances for the ultimate in premium comfort. “The shoe costs 250 euros – a true statement in the running shoe sector. The more excited I was, how would make the dangerous red-black glittering car in practice.

The rather rigid construction and the sole made of relatively hard plastic give rise to skepticism when trying on the shoe for the first time. One fears, as in a cross country shoe to run. But far from it: the rolling, the damping and the running feeling are optimally matched to each other and you notice nothing of the solid components on the foot. Rolling and damping are impressive: Small to medium sized stones, small edges in the tar or branches on forest roads you just roll over. As a result, the »MetaRide« also forgives a “sloppy running style”. Overall, we were surprised by the running characteristics of the Asics MetaRide. Especially less experienced or retired runners will benefit from the good-natured running behavior.

The shoe was tested on different road conditions, from asphalt on gravel and forest road to a piece of meadow. All the challenges of this track were mastered without any problems, with the focus clearly on hard ground. The lacing can be regulated very precisely and lasts well. The support in the arch of the foot is noticeably firm and you notice here a part of the overall quite high structure of the sole and the damping. The latter gives reason to fear that too much energy may be lost due to the good feathers, but at this point we preferred to cushion the energy with the sole and not with the knee. All in all, a great running shoe, which immediately gives joy while running.

Asics Gel DS Trainer 24

“Windschnittig”, this adjective had caught our eye when we read the product description of the Asics Gel DS-Trainer on the manufacturer’s side. A slightly anachronistic word from the end of the last millennium as driving and airplanes became more and more streamlined. To make it understandable for young runners: aerodynamically it’s called today.

As an ambitious gourmet with a good 1,000 km / year on mostly gravel my typical running shoe is rather robust with good cushioning. The competitions, which I plan to take every year for the joy of running and motivational support, are already being ambitiously approached. In order to support the material side, a slightly lighter shoe should now be at the start – and it is light! Asics states 240 grams / shoe. But you would have to have smaller feet, because my 44er brings 260 g on the kitchen scale. The all-rounder, which I otherwise run, has 320 g. That beats already. Accelerate the difference of 60 g at 10 km 10,000 times from 0 to just under 30 km / h – that’s 600 kilograms in theory …

Well then: nothing like in the running clothes and on the first test run. The fit is excellent for my “standard foot”. The shoe sits like a glove, the seamless upper made in different weave structures adapts very well and fixes remarkably well without unnecessary constriction. The first kilometer on tar makes the low damping clearly noticeable. I focus on getting stronger in the forefoot area instead of the heel. That alone brings speed and corresponds to my running style at higher speeds. After running nearly one hundred kilometers I can say that the damping is by no means too small for me 80 kg runners. After the tar prologue it goes on my standard ground: solid Isarradweg gravel. Again, the ASICS GEL DS-Trainer 24 presents itself with pleasantly direct ground contact, stable, neutral, very supportive. The initially good feeling regarding fit is confirmed. Of course, after a few kilometers of running in, it makes sense to install a few speed intervals at once. With a pace of around 4 min / km, the shoe is fully in its element. My conclusion: A visually very appealing, clean and high-quality processed, light shoe with rather low cushioning and good fit for ambitious runners.

Under Armor HOVR Sonic 2

Here comes the styler under the test shoes – the Under Armor HOVR Sonic 2. Alone, the transition from mint green to neon-orange sole provides an eye-catcher effect like any other shoe in the test field. A striking feature of the fit is the slanted heel area – almost like a climbing shoe, the foot is pushed forwards into the toe area. When entering, the Under Armor HOVR Sonic 2 ensures a smiley face. It wears as uncomplicated and straightforward as one would expect from an Under Armor shoe. But the American brand can also score while running?

Excited, I perform the HOVR Sonic 2 on a road round, which leads almost exclusively on tar and fein gekieste ways. The shoe dampens moderately to tight, according to manufacturer information, the sole is predestined for longer runs. On my lap, the HOVR Sonic 2 gives ample unspectacular and does its job reliably. It turns out to be relatively small, which you can not chalk it up – you should choose the Under Armor HOVR Sonic 2 slightly larger than the »street shoe size«.

All in all, I am satisfied with the shoe – it does its job reliably and is more unspectacular in terms of running behavior than the upbeat look suggests. He perfectly manages the balancing act between a stylish casual running shoe and a long-distance man who is perfect as a training shoe for the next half-marathon and marathon. But to make it a competitive shoe, you would have to lose a few grams.

Mizuno Wave R >

Mizuno is certainly no stranger to the running scene. The Japanese have been in the lead for years when it comes to running shoes. So I’m curious to have the first time ever a model of the Japanese manufacturer on the feet.

First impression: Wow, how good-natured! The Mizuno Wave Rider 22 wraps your foot comfortably on the first run. I dare and take the 644 gram Mizuno classic on a 10 km and a 24 km run. Similar to the Brooks Ricochet and the Saucony Kinvara 10, I immediately feel good. Unlike the former, the Wave Rider – the name says it all – has a sophisticated damping system. Who – like me – has been running for a long time with little steamed shoes, will be skeptical about the Wave Rider. Will not that feel spongy? I am particularly brave and not only test the Wave Rider on tar – which is what the shoe is intended for, but on changing surfaces. What can I say: I am positively surprised by the Wave Rider 22.

Although the impressively large heel cushioning in steeply cut bends is quite noticeable – nevertheless, the shoe runs amazingly homogeneous and pleasant. The smooth and firm lacing was noticed immediately positive, also has the Wave Rider 22 on a good-natured rolling behavior. I would immediately book him as a favorite shoe, if he had a slightly rougher profile for off-road use. But it was not designed to last and remains a hot tip for those looking for a highly comfortable men’s running shoe for use on hard terrain. Oh yes, I almost forgot one thing: The Wave Rider 22 weighs surprisingly little for what it offers in terms of cushioning and comfort.

The Knit-Hype (or rather, the current trend towards the use of knit upper materials for running shoes) did not stop at the industry giant Adidas. What you also notice about the UltraBoost is a touch of retro design. For example, adidas is relying on its torsion system on the UltraBoost, which has proven itself for years.

So I’m very excited about the Adidas, which brings a few features that seem familiar from the Puma Hybrid Runner Unrest ago. Particularly striking is also the Adidas knit construction. The upper is made of 100% knit, the foot has a very comfortable fit – almost like a sock. The knit construction is supported from the outside only by the tabs of the lacing system, which is fixed solely to the sole. The result is a comfortable, yet stable seat and excellent ventilation. Also, the boost damping knows to convince. The shoe absorbs excellent, lies in the curve full on the ground and makes medium-length runs to a pleasure. The Adidas is fast becoming a popular everyday accessory, with which you can sometimes start on the running track, if you just feel like it. It does not occur to me to regard him as a pure competitor. He is a little too lazy and a bit too heavy for that.

In training, the concept has worked well – the UltraBoost performs on hard ground as well as on gravel. So the UltraBoost remains both running shoe and fashion statement, with which one can run well. The shoe looks darn good, but in my eyes does not bring along the performance that predestines it for the hunt for personal bests.

Salomon Sonic Ra Pro 2

No prices found.

Ra – that is the Egyptian sun god. Therefore, the Salomon Sonic Ra Pro 2 was also run in the sunshine. What strikes immediately is the tight-fitting shaft. Salomon uses a stretchy, neoprene-like material for an excellent fit. Also, the weight of the shoe is immediately positive – there is little on the foot, which hinders and unnecessarily complains. I take the shoe on a good 13 km lap. Half tar, half gravel path with alternating “grain”. It soon becomes clear that the Sonic Ra 2 likes tar rather than coarse gravel paths, as small stones like to cling to the deep troughs. Which does not mean that the Salomon Sonic Ra Pro 2 does not like gravel paths. For me, the Sonic Ra Pro 2 is the perfect city car and is perfect for urban running. Whether on fine-grained paths in the park or on sidewalks – the Salomon Sonic Ra 2 is the perfect training and competition shoe for people who mostly train on “tame” ground. What also pleases on the Sonic Ra Pro 2 is the large, reflective loop at the rear – with this shoe you are well seen in the dim light!

After a short break I am very happy with the Salomon Sonic Ra Pro 2 – it is similar to the Gel DS Trainer 24, but undercuts it in terms of weight. Since it is a little less muted, I would tend to suggest it to runners who already have some more running experience. I’ll be pulling him out of the closet for half-marathon distance runs in the future, for which I need a comfortable, lightweight shoe with an excellent fit.

Brütting Project

Brütting is something like the Dacia among the shoe manufacturers. Cheap in purchase, reliable in function, not necessarily the source of ideas in the industry. So I took the Brütting Project on an 11 km round, which led 2/3 over tar and 1/3 over gravel paths. What initially baffles you is the weight. With 484 grams per pair, the Brütting lands in the top 5 and feels at the foot pleasantly light. As far as the upper material is concerned, Brütting uses a combination of knitwear and plastic elements. This provides good support during the run, but he does not quite match the competition with the ventilation like New Balance Fresh Foam Zante Pursuit. Nevertheless, in view of this price-performance miracle, it is almost inevitable to ask what significance the brand name has when buying shoes …

The Project knows how to convince with its good-natured, forgiving performance during the first run. For a price of only 60 euros, he certainly knows how to score. Why spend more, if it brings a shoe for 60 euros too? Well, you have to go into detail to be able to argue here. The processing is not quite up to high-end shoes like the adidas UltraBoost approach, and the design is not as detailed as the one or other competition. The patches and contrasting textile parts do not look quite as high quality. Nevertheless, Brütting, for example, relies on an OrthoLite insole that excellently supports the foot and makes the Project a low-cost, functional running partner that does not need to shy away from comparison with more expensive models.
