Dreizinnenhütte, the dolomite classic in South Tyrol

The Dreizinnenhütte | The Dolomites classic in South Tyrol

The Three Peaks are THE landmark of the Sesto Dolomites in South Tyrol. The classic hiking routes are either the circumnavigation of the Drei Zinnen or the tour to the Dreizinnenhütte. No matter which tour you choose, we promise you one thing: All tours give you fantastic views of the rugged peaks of the Dolomites.

Directions to the trail parking lot at the Auronzo hut

From Dobbiaco follow the signs to the Auronzo hut. For the private road to the hut is currently estimated € 25.00 toll (surcharge for multi-day tours). Once at the top, our tour starts immediately behind the Auronzohütte (2,320 m). We follow the wide gravel path in the direction of Lavaredohütte. This first section runs mostly without incline. Nevertheless, we stop every few meters: this incredible view of the jagged, rugged Dolomites. The view of the surrounding mountains burns into the heart, so unique is it here. At the end of August, the lupines bloom in full splendor to the left and right of the path.

The next stop is the Lavaredo hut. Of course, we do not stop here, but as the temperature rises, we zip off the legs of our hiking pants. Now follows the first big climb. We choose the slightly wider right-hand path up to the Paternsattel (2,454 m).

A look back at the Auronzo hut … surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Sesto Dolomites.

Hike to the Dreizinnenhütte

At the top of the Patern saddle, the panorama changes again. To the left of us, the Three Peaks tower up, in front of us you can already see the three-in-one hut. Several paths lead from here to the Dreizinnenhütte. A little further up and quite narrow, a path runs along the Paternkofel. Here you should be absolutely free from giddiness, because the way is sometimes very steep. Farther down is path no. 101. The trail is quite wide, but has more uphill and downhill. We decide on the broader path and keep squinting left to the Three Peaks. With every meter they show themselves more in all their splendor. Huge monoliths that defy every weather and every situation completely unimpressed.

The ascent to the Dreizinnenhütte is then a bit exhausting, as the rock-cut steps are quite high. You take it smoothly with one step two steps at a time. At the top, there is wild activity at the hut. In the high season it is just always full. No wonder with the dream view of the Drei Zinnen. A little behind the hut are the two soils lakes (Laghi dei Piani). If you have provisions with you, this would be a wonderful picnic spot. Just above the Dreizinnenhütte you can enjoy a wonderful view of the underlying Paternkofel. We look forward to a little shade and fortify ourselves at Pustertaler Schlutzkrapfen with parmesan butter.

Cabin classics: Pustetaler Schlutzkrapfen with Parmesan butter!

Returning to the Auronzo Hut, you can either follow the path or continue on trail no. 101 at the foot of the Dreizinnen Hut. Since unfortunately clouds raise we decide for the identical way back. With plenty of photo stops and a restorative (and delicious !!) Piece of buckwheat cake in the lavaredo hut, we still leave plenty of time in the country.
