Instructions for proper tooth cleaning and dental care
Healthy teeth are aesthetically beautiful. After all, nobody likes to watch someone laugh, whose teeth are discolored, crooked in the mouth or even missing. Teeth cleaning is therefore an important topic – for adults as well as for children. Awareness raising has increased in recent years. Even in kindergarten, children are encouraged by their teachers to brush their teeth after eating.
Nevertheless, it happens again and again, especially to adults, that they do not properly clean their teeth. Sometimes this happens out of ignorance, sometimes out of laziness. At the latest when you visit the dentist again, when they give you advice on proper dental care or even have to drill a hole, you realize how important it is to maintain healthy teeth. Dental care begins with the purchase of the toothbrush. These instructions therefore provide tips on how to buy the right brush, cleaning technology and using tools such as dental floss.
Buying the toothbrush
Anyone standing in front of the shelf with toothbrushes in the supermarket is regularly overwhelmed by the selection:
The right toothbrush is important so that the gums are not injured when brushing
With thick bristles, with thin bristles, arranged as an X, with a swivel head or without – the variants are almost endless. It is basically not important how flexible the brush head is. Only the bristles themselves are important: they should be made of plastic and rounded so that the gums are not injured when brushing.
If the bristles of the old toothbrush look frayed, it’s time for a new one. In general, this care product should be changed every two to three months. Also with an electric toothbrush; in this case, however, the color of the bristles often provides information about when it is time to change the head.
Toothpaste for bad breath
When buying the toothpaste, it is not wrong to go wrong, describes a guide from the Greifswald University Medical Center. The personal taste applies here: If you like it spicy, you should, for example, grab a menthol paste – this also ensures fresh breath.
Buyers should only pay attention to the fluoride content: if this is high, it means additional protection against caries. There are also so-called toothpastes that are supposed to whiten teeth. These should be used with caution. They usually contain an increased concentration of abrasives, which gradually grind the teeth.
The cleaning technique for clean teeth
In kindergarten and at school, people learn the circling technique that many maintain until adulthood. This technique is not bad, but the covering is not optimally removed. It is better to shake it off and then wipe it off.
According to stern.de, the toothbrush is placed on the gum line at an angle of approximately 45 °. The cleaner applies light pressure to the bust and then shakes it. Then he wipes the brush from red (gums) to white (teeth).
In this way, the loosened deposits are efficiently removed from the teeth. This technique should be repeated on all external and internal surfaces of the teeth. The vibrating technique on the occlusal surfaces of the molars is usually sufficient.
Teeth cleaning – The duration of the brushing process
The general assumption is that cleaning should take about three minutes. If you don’t want to stand in front of the mirror for so long, you can also shorten the time by one minute – two or two minutes a day are sufficient, according to welt.de..
It is important, however, that cleaning is in the foreground and every tooth is considered – a two-minute back and forth scrubbing on the front teeth does not ensure that the rear teeth are clean. Long brushing your teeth to really think about all parts of the mouth is not helpful. This increases the risk of injuring gums and tooth enamel.
Dental floss for the interdental spaces
There are 30 interdental spaces in an adult dentition.
These are not or only insufficiently cleaned with the toothbrush, which is why tools are appropriate; Dental floss is the best known. The use of this cleaning agent poses a risk of injury.
The technique is such that the silk is placed between the teeth and then passed from bottom to top. The most common mistake in the application is too high tension of the thread: the dental floss is sharp, so that when pulled tight it can painfully cut into the gums.
Teeth that have amalgam bombs also have sharp edges on which remnants of dental floss can remain. These are pressed into the gums later when chewing and cause injuries. It is therefore important that this cleaning agent is used carefully. If this is too dangerous for you, you can also use interdental brushes.
Tooth cleaning with interdental brushes
These brushes are elongated and very thin, so that they get into the interdental spaces. In technical jargon they are called interdental brushes.
The application is relatively simple: They are guided between the teeth, moved back and forth a few times and removed again. The risk of injury is relatively low.
The gum bleeding that occurs at the beginning is caused by inflamed gums. This is very sensitive due to the coating on the teeth, which causes it to bleed. With regular use, this stops after a few days.
30 interdental spaces can also be cleaned with the interdental brushes. Since not all rooms are the same size, it is worth buying different sizes. It is best to ask the dentist which brushes are suitable for you.
A good alternative to the interdental brush is an oral irrigator. With an oral irrigator, daily dental care is optimized through excellent teeth cleaning. This protects and strengthens the gums and prevents impending periodontitis.
Prevention of healthy teeth
Brushing your teeth alone is usually not enough for prevention.
Healthy teeth make you smile and smile – that’s why it’s important to take precautions
Despite the most careful care, there may be inflammation or even tooth decay. A regular examination at the dentist is therefore necessary for daily dental care.
Additional dental insurance can also be worthwhile, especially with regard to teeth, which are usually more susceptible to aging.
Depending on the scope of services, patients receive a proportionate to a full reimbursement of costs for dental services, as shown on ErgoDirekt.
Since these insurances usually also cover the costs of a prophylaxis measure, this is worthwhile even for people who have healthy teeth.
These measures include, for example, professional tooth cleaning. Everyone should have this done by the dentist once or twice a year.
Not only are the teeth and interdental spaces cleared of all deposits, but also the possibly existing tartar is removed. Tartar cannot be removed by cleaning alone at home unless you use an ultrasonic toothbrush. This works much like the ultrasound device that the dentist uses.
Together with careful mouth cleaning twice a day and a regular visit to the dentist including prophylactic measures, dental health is no longer a problem for most people.
