Birth in hamburg: after the birth

After birth

If the birth is uncomplicated, the mother and child stay in the hospital for two to three days. In many clinics there is now a so-called "24-hour rooming-in": Mother and child are in the same room. If necessary, in some clinics it is also possible to leave the child to experienced sisters for a time in a supervised room, so that the young mother can find a time of rest for herself.

The time after

The baby is here and all friends and relatives want to see it immediately. But it is no coincidence that the first six to eight weeks after birth are called “puerperium”. Of course you do not necessarily have to spend that in bed as a mother, but the meaning is clear: the mother should recover from the pregnancy and childbirth.

The term “childbed” or “childbed” came from the fact that in earlier times women did not actually leave the house or bed during the first few weeks. In Germany, it was customary until the 20th century for neighbors to bring a pot of soup every day after birth. So the mother herself did not need to cook, the family was provided with food and she could recover.

Many women today want to start again right after birth. After all, pregnancy is not a disease and the expectation of being fit again soon after birth is transmitted to women. Unfortunately, this often leads to problems that should be avoided with a strictly taken childbed: postpartum depression, breastfeeding problems, chest infection, overwork and weekly backlog.

The body turns around

In the first weeks after birth, the body hormonally returns to “not pregnant”. The uterus shrinks again. The after-effects occurring on the first days after birth help. Women feel this especially when breastfeeding. They help the uterus to regress well. The wound site where the mother cake was in the uterus also heals. As a result, women have the so-called weekly flow. This takes about eight weeks. The entire physical change leads to emotional imbalance. The tears come easily. Time is also called baby blues.

Mothers who breastfeed must first get used to the rhythm with their child. Within three to four days after birth, the production of breast milk begins instead of the previously produced colostrum. Sometimes it does not work right away with the right posture and position, so that mother and child find each other relaxed. It takes time and rest.

The pain passes

The birth injuries are usually healed after the time of the week bed. The seam of a dam crack or cut no longer hurts and sitting is more comfortable again. Until one comes to this, an inflated swimming ring is often recommended as a seat cushion. But this lets the weak pelvic floor sag so that it comes to stretching of the scar. Women should often change the seating position to reduce the pressure on the perineum.

If friends and relatives come to visit, bring coffee and cake with them. This is not rude, but self-protection. If you can not bring that to heart as a “good hostess”, then it’s best to freeze cake before you die, which you can then offer. And say, if it gets too much for you. No visit should take more than two hours during this time. Anyone who crawls off to bed with the little one and just feels the closeness to his child does something good for the soul and the body.

TIP: Go to the check-up about 6-8 weeks after delivery (do not forget your mother’s passport)

Parental leave and parental allowance

Parental leave is a legal entitlement of both parents to the employer for unpaid leave from work on the occasion of childbirth and for the purpose of caring for the child. Parental leave is regulated in the Federal Parental Allowance and Parental Leave Act.

In addition, you can apply for parental allowance as a parent. Parental benefit is an income-related benefit; i.e. the amount depends on your net income. To do this you either have to stay home or reduce your working hours for childcare. The parental leave is only one "Time off from the job"; the parental allowance regardless of one "cash benefit".

On our special pages on parental leave and parental allowance, we have collected all the important information.
