onlay

An onlay (also padding or dome filling) is a special kind of tooth filling. Similar to a partial crown, the onlay covers larger parts of the tooth surface, for example in the area of the cusps or the outer walls. Because onlays are produced in the dental laboratory, they include dental crowns, for example, as a fixed denture. In this they differ from smaller fillings, which the dentist models in practice or directly on the patient’s tooth.

The size and shape of an onlay depends on the damage to the tooth. Onlays are mostly used to treat teeth with advanced caries damage. They provide a very durable and esthetic supply when the loss of substance on the tooth is too great for a simple filling, but not so extensive that the tooth must be over-crowned. The onlay retains more of the natural tooth substance than a preparation for a crown, with the transition from the onlay to the partial crown or “three-quarter crown” being fluid.

Onlay – costs

The cost of an onlay is made up of the dentist’s fee, the material costs and the manufacturing costs in the dental laboratory. If the dentures are manufactured in a German laboratory, the costs for an onlay are on average between 500 and 700 euros. However, these are only guidelines: Different onlay prices result from the size of the dentures and the material from which the dentures are made.

There are several possibilities: Onlays can be made of precious metals (eg dental gold), non-noble metals (NEM, eg dental steel) or ceramics. In addition to onlays made of all-ceramic, variants made of metal with tooth-colored ceramic veneer are also possible. Pure ceramic onlays have the most natural aesthetics, as this material, like real teeth, is slightly translucent and can be carried out in the individual tooth color. However, for people suffering from nocturnal teeth grinding (bruxism), shatterproof and shatterproof gold onlays may be more useful.

Difference to the inlay

The inlay is a filler filling that covers neither the bumps nor the sides of the natural tooth crown. Onlays, on the other hand, are pleated fillings that extend beyond the inner or middle area like partial crowns. Even if only one of the cusps is covered, it is no longer an inlay but an onlay. The depth of the filling – how far the filling material is brought into the tooth – on the other hand plays no role in the correct name.

Treatment procedure for onlays

Unlike when using a simple composite or amalgam dental filling, at least two sessions in the dental office are required for an onlay. The dentist removes the damaged tooth substance and then forms the tooth exactly by means of impression or oral scan. The measurements thus determined then go to the dental laboratory, where the dental technician the dentures from the selected material -. As gold, ceramic or (partially) veneered metal – produces accurate. In another session with the dentist, the finished onlay is then stably attached to the tooth by cementing or cementing. Then the tooth can be fully loaded and used normally.

In order to protect the tooth, which has been prepared for the treatment with an onlay, from pain and mechanical irritation, the dentist provides him with a provisional filling. The temporary also prevents food particles from getting into the cavity. If the actual dentures completed, the transitional solution is removed and replaced.
