What is the psyche?

The psyche controls man’s mental and inner life, influences his perception and controls his reactions. The psyche is today considered as one of four parts that make up the non-material portion of the human individual. The other intangible areas are mind, soul and consciousness.

Psyche exists only in connection with the body, whereas the soul exists in all world religions even after the death of the physical body. For many amateurs psyche and soul are the same, but that is not true. The psyche is the sum of all human perceptions and thinking. The soul, on the other hand, summarizes all human emotions, and therefore has a great deal in common with the psyche.

The psyche is a kind of storage medium. It stores memories or distorts them to cope with anxiety. Psyche is different in every person. It provides us with a comprehensive picture of reality, but complements it with information from the past and ideas about the future. A complex psyche can represent the reality very differentiated, but also a very distorted image of it.

function & task

Even medicine has a hard time with the definition of the psyche. They see the psyche as the sum of several components: it consists of consciousness and ego consciousness, attention, memory, formal and content thinking, perception, drive and affect.

Consciousness is decisive for our personality and can also be deliberately switched off (narcosis). The mind forms the mental faculties of man, that is, his intellect, his thinking, his communicative abilities and his power of decision. For example, the mind can reveal distortions of reality.

Spirit and psyche always work together. The psyche helps in the formation of a consciousness. Consciousness enables the distinction between memory and reality and helps to correct a distorted image. Thus, the psyche has great influence on the physical and mental health and can strengthen or weaken the immune system.

Mental health is a pleasant feeling that expresses well-being and is determined by environmental factors and personal factors. Those who are mentally healthy can usually cope with the demands placed on them.

If the reality is perceived very distorted, the psyche loses part of its basic functions and fear can no longer be properly processed. If the psyche is ill, the distortion of the perceived image is often even increased and therapeutic help is needed.

A 100% healthy psyche is as good as no human being, but usually he is not dominated by his fear. The emotional stability has an influence on how man masters fatalities. Today, we know that mental stability is largely genetic. There are “lucky genes” that control mental stability. People who are equipped with many of these genes stay balanced even when they are stressed. The hereditary factors thus determine not only the influences of the environment, but also the fundamental constitution of the soul.

Diseases & complaints

An actual imbalance of the psyche is expressed in many different ways. The most common mental illnesses are addictions and anxiety disorders. Everyone knows fears and worries, but when they become overly strong, performance and well-being are impaired. Then the fear is already an independent disease. Even children can be affected. Of course, not every feeling of insecurity needs to be medically treated, because anxiety regulates the life functions and protects us from danger.

Anxiety disorders come in different forms. There are short-term anxiety attacks, panic attacks, but also a pronounced anxiety syndrome. Permanent anxiety also leads to organic dysfunction. Affected then have shortness of breath, trembling hands, sleep disorders, nightmares, weaknesses and lose more and more of their zest for life. The depression is also a result of intense fears and shows itself with permanent mood lows.

Today, several psychotherapeutic treatment options for the treatment of mental illnesses are available, often supplemented with medication. However, although it is known that the psyche rules the body, many physicians still treat mental illness based on physical symptoms. The triggering factors that lie in the psyche are often given too little understanding.

Although genes affect mental stability, they are not solely responsible for them. Only in the social interaction it turns out how resilient people actually are. Those who have supportive families and friends stay calm in stressful situations.

In order to feel comfortable in his body, it needs many influences. For example, the soul loves the green of nature, which is a protective factor for mental health. Nature inspires the soul, leaves it relaxed and protects against anxiety and depression.
