The 8 biggest mistakes when brushing your teeth

What to look for when brushing your teeth and what do most people do wrong? Read here which errors should be avoided.

We learn to brush our teeth as toddlers, and in the course of our lives, we do it many thousands of times without even thinking about it. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of this, many people brush negligently and inattentively with time. Here are the most common brushing mistakes that should be avoided.

  1. Use the wrong toothbrush
Manual toothbrush should be soft, as hard bristles can damage the gums. In addition, brushes made of natural material such as animal hair or pig bristles are not recommended. The size of the brush head should also be tailored to the size of her mouth. Incidentally, with the right brushing technique, optimal care can be achieved both with manual toothbrushes and with electric toothbrushes, whereby the correct handling of the latter is certainly easier to learn. Recommended models can be found in the comparison test.
  2. Do not brush enough or not long enough
The teeth should be brushed at least twice a day, better three times a day. Because the longer the periods between the cleaning operations, the more time harmful bacteria have to settle in the mouth. In addition, a cleaning process should last at least 2 minutes, better 3 minutes. Only in this way can all areas be adequately cleaned and useful ingredients of toothpaste such as fluoride have enough time to unfold their full effect.
  3. Too often or too hard to clean
More than three times a day you should brush the teeth only in exceptional cases. This can cause irritation to the gums and even damage the teeth themselves. You should also avoid pressing too hard when brushing. Here is always: Better gentle and careful, but brush a little longer, than short and violent.
  4. Clean with wrong movements
You should never brush with horizontal movements along the gum lines. This cleans the teeth and especially the gaps only inadequate and can lead to gum injuries. Better put the brush head on the gum at a 45 ° angle and then clean it from red to white with short movements. Alternatively, you can also perform circular movements.
  5. Always start in the same place
Many people always start brushing at the same spot, for example, at the top right of the last molar tooth. As a result, this position is usually best maintained and others tend to be neglected. Because arrived at the last quadrant, one is rather bored or even unfocused and the quality of plaster suffers. Therefore you should alternate the quadrant with which you start again and again.
  6. Unimportant places are hardly or not cleaned
Many focus on cleaning especially on the always visible outer tooth surfaces. But deposits and bacteria must of course be removed in the barely visible places. Therefore, you should be careful to carefully clean the occlusal surfaces and the inside of the teeth. Often the tongue surface is forgotten. Bacteria particularly like to settle here and coverings can lead to bad breath.
  7. Do not sufficiently clean the toothbrush after brushing
After brushing, the brush head should always be thoroughly rinsed under the tap. Only then can the bacteria be removed, which otherwise can settle on the brushes until the next cleaning. You should also make sure that the bristles are dry. Shake and wag the brushes thoroughly after rinsing. Constantly wet bristles can deform and are especially inviting to bacteria.
  8. The toothbrush will not be replaced in time
At the latest after 3-4 months it is time to dispose of a toothbrush. But it is better not only to pay attention to the duration, but much more to the condition of the toothbrush itself. As soon as the bristles change color or shape, usually also suffers the cleaning result. By the way, some toothbrushes have extra color indicators that indicate when an exchange is needed.
