Common and individual spiritual practice, learning and teaching yoga, growing together in community, walking through developmental processes, rubbing against each other and learning from each other – all this and much more characterizes the Yoga Vidya community.

Yoga Vidya is a great, spiritual yoga community.

We live, practice and serve together in many yoga centers throughout Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland. We have 4 ashrams with between 10-170 community members and nearly 100 city centers with 1-10 members. Yoga Vidya has existed since 1992 – since then we have established many communities and still have much to do.

We live by our own personal development and for spiritual growth because our vision is , to make the world a more peaceful and beautiful place.

In our community, respectful interaction is traditionally anchored. In order to ensure a climate in which good growth is possible, in which one can contribute and feel well, it is necessary for all to observe important rules. Through our rules and democratically made decisions that are firmly anchored in our organizational structure, we get security and a framework in which we can classify and move.

In the Yoga Vidya community, we want to join forces to bring about this. For this we need you and many idealistic-minded people who are looking for a meaningful task in life and a spiritual alternative to the established. Yoga Vidya is growing. We have lots of ideas and plans on how to spread yoga even more. As an example, we want to open more Yoga Vidya Centers in other countries, new Ashrams / Yoga communities by the sea, possibly in the Canary Islands,. If you are interested in one of these or similar projects, it makes sense to first go to one of the ashrams or a city center to get used to and learn well. Afterwards, the desired project will manifest itself, when the corresponding Sevaka starts with energy and enthusiasm for it.

Living in communities – an alternative, human life model

Man is made to live in larger communities. In ancient times these were the tribe, the village community or the extended family. At the present time, people live isolated, in small families, one-person households. Frequent changes of workplace, place of residence and working hours make interpersonal contacts difficult. Many people do more communication over the Internet than with real people.

For many millennia, people also live together in spiritual communities, monasteries, lay monasteries, communities, ashrams.
Spiritual communities provide the best conditions for spiritual growth, fulfilling and meaningful life. In addition, they are the starting point for ideas for the whole society. Visitors to spiritual communities can receive new power and inspiration for everyday life.

Yoga Vidya Sevaka communities

The Yoga Vidya Sevaka communities are built on the Indian Ashram model. Ashram, literally refuge, is the Indian model of a spiritual community. Thus, in the Yoga Vidya communities, the classical Indian ashram community principles of communal and individual spiritual practice, disinterested service, pure disciplined lifestyle, of simplicity, spiritual growth, and equality apply. These ashram principles are combined with ideas from humanism, from the grassroots based on equality based community movement of the 60s and 70s, as well as modern communication psychology such as Nonviolent Communication.

They enable a holistic yoga life in the modern age. Yoga Vidya is traditional and modern, spiritual and lifelike, idealistic and pragmatic, dynamic, creative and always on the move.

We want to establish yoga in public and society. Our professional associations help us to give yoga an even bigger name. These are the professional association for yoga teachers and yoga teachers, the professional association for instructors, consultants, coaches, healers of various alternative holistic health professions of advisory and healing professions and the professional association for yoga and ayurvedic therapists.
